**The Role**
The position will oversee the development of numerical tools to evaluate the hydrodynamic (manoeuvring/seakeeping, wakes, propulsion) performance of submarines, and underwater vehicles. This includes validated mathematical models and simulations to predict the relevant characteristics of the maritime platforms.

The position will also direct related experimental programs. This work will contribute to the acquisition and sustainment of Royal Australian Navy platforms. The person will work closely with other members within the Platforms Division, and develop research programs with Australian universities, industry and international partners. This position requires reporting within DST and supervision of staff/contractors.

- Manage the development of validated mathematical/numerical techniques and tools to predict and evaluate the manoeuvring/seakeeping, wakes, propulsion behaviour of submarine and underwater vehicles, and establish and maintain an academic partnership network relevant to these topics.
- Organise and conduct experimental work to validate and complement manoeuvring/seakeeping, propulsor simulations.
- Conduct and oversee studies to characterise and enhance the hydrodynamic performance of current and future submarines and underwater vehicle.
- Plan and manage a range of human and physical resources required to conduct complex hydrodynamic research.
- Initiate develop and maintain national and international partnerships in relation to manoeuvring/seakeeping, propulsor studies and research.

**About our Team**
DST Group's Platforms Division provides science and technology (S&T) expertise to deliver the capability edge to defence and enhance the operational performance and survivability of defence platforms in the maritime domain. The Vehicle Autonomy and Dynamics MSTC develops innovative uncrewed system technologies and enhances the operational performance of both crewed and uncrewed military platforms across the air, land and maritime domains. This includes the hydrodynamic, propulsion, and manoeuvring performance of ships and submarines.

The Hydrodynamics group undertakes computational and experimental studies addressing hydrodynamic, manoeuvring, seakeeping and hydroacoustics effects on maritime platform design and operation. This includes the development and validation of experimental and numerical hydrodynamic techniques to examine and evaluate new and innovative platform designs.

The group also undertakes research on flow noise generated by the platform and on propellers and propulsor systems, including evaluating propulsor performance and through life management. The group has access to a number of world class experimental facilities.

Drawing on their specialised knowledge and considerable experience, the will be able to identify the emerging opportunities in naval vessel dynamics and control science. They will use this to initiate research programs that will advance Defence capability - particularly in relation to the RAN Future Submarine, as well as underwater vehicle capability enhancements of current platforms.
