Agriculture Victoria Research is seeking to recruit an experienced Technical Officer - Biorationals to work in its Invertebrate and Weed Sciences team, which delivers research in integrated pest management, invertebrate diagnostics and surveillance, weed management and biological control of invertebrate pests and weeds. The successful applicant will be required to provide and coordinate technical support for laboratory and field work associated with the suite of microbial biorationals projects at the AgriBio Centre in Bundoora. Specific tasks include rigorously following experimental protocols, routine molecular diagnostics protocols, culturing fungi and bacteria using aseptic technique, rearing and handling insects for laboratory screening trials, collecting data from bioassays, and assisting with small-scale field trials to be conducted at the Agriculture Victoria regional centre SmartFarm sites. A strong background in biopesticide assays with experience in insect culturing. The incumbent will be part of a multidisciplinary team that conducts a wide variety of work across the Microbial Sciences, Pests and Diseases unit. The position offers opportunities to be trained in diverse aspects of IPM research.
Specialist/Technical Expertise/Qualifications
- A relevant Honours or Masters degree in Science, Biological Science or Agricultural Science in the field of entomology, plant protection or plant pathology.
- Proven experience conducting technical laboratory research involving microorganisms and/or their products, including media preparation, culturing, aseptic technique (for microbiology), data collection and record keeping.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain and manage insect cultures for research and to conduct insect bioassay experiments with fungi.
- Basic statistical analysis and data presentation.
This is a fixed term position available for a period of 3 years. The work location for this position is AgriBio Centre, Bundoora.
