**About the team**:
The **National Measurement Institute** (NMI) is Australian Government’s peak authority on measurement. We play an important role in the Australian economy by leading, maintaining and regulating Australia’s measurement system. We deliver world-class measurement products, advice and client services and administer the regulatory framework for measurement.
The **Legal Metrology Branch** primary role is to administer Australia’s measurement legislation, ensuring a level playing field, for consumers, businesses and international trade.
The **Trade Measurement Services** plays an important role in ensuring Australian consumers and industry can rely on trusted measurements for fair trade in goods and services. To ensure traders comply with the law and adopt correct measurement trading practices, we employ inspectors who check that:
- measuring instruments (for example, weighing instruments, fuel pumps and weighbridges) are accurate throughout Australia
- pre-packaged articles contain the correct amount of produce
- fuel sold in service stations complies with fuel quality standards.
We also support the outcomes of the government agencies, undertaking inspection and audit activities through memoranda of understanding.
- contribute to the delivery of a diverse range of highly specialised technical services and regulatory activities in accordance with best practice, government policy and legislative requirements
- negotiate with clients and contractors to communicate the strategic vision of the agency
- lead and motivate a diverse team, ensuring a positive, engaged and high performing team environment
- establish and maintain strong productive and collaborative working relationships with various stakeholders
- engage with and resolve complex issues, think strategically and undertake analysis
- prepare high level policy advice, reports and briefings
- interpret contracts and specifications to implement risk and principles-based technical policy.
You will also have:
- in-depth knowledge of legislative, financial and administrative frameworks, government decision-making processes and department guidelines and regulations, including but not limited to, complex trade measurement issues, techniques, verification and trading practices
- extensive knowledge of statutory, regulatory and policy frameworks
- well-developed skills in research, analysis, problem solving, planning and organisation.
Experience in a compliance and enforcement environment is also desirable.
**What you will do**:
Under broad direction, the successful applicant will:
- Develop, implement and monitor/evaluate the region’s work programs and compliance activities, including the setting of work priorities, proactive risk-based inspection activities and oversight of essential procurement.
- Provide leadership and direction to a geographically diverse team for program delivery to ensure high quality outputs including ensuring employees maintain a high level of specialist, professional and/or technical expertise.
- Undertake risk assessments and risk management activities for projects/programs.
- Engage and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to identify opportunities, develop programs, achieve outcomes and facilitate cooperation.
- Provide expert technical advice and develop national compliance policies, National Instrument Test Procedures and National Test Procedures.
- Maintain systems relating to proactive compliance strategies and assist in the development and implementation of legislative initiatives.
- Create and maintain a high-performance work environment by mentoring and developing talent, rewarding achievement, setting clear expectations and addressing concerns early, including through physical attendance of regional operational locations as required.
