About the Business Unit
The Office of the Public Advocate (OPA) is an independent statutory office accountable to the Victorian Parliament which has been established to protect the rights and enhance the position of people with disabilities in Victoria.
This position is part of the Advice & Education service, which includes the Advice Service and the Community Education program. This service sits within the Advice & Response Program.
The Advice Service responds to over 13,000 calls a year from family members and service providers on a range of issues relating to disability and advocacy.
About the Role
The Advocacy Support and Advice Officer will be responsible for triaging requests for advocacy and play an important role in providing advocacy for people with disabilities, to promote their rights and dignity. The Advocacy Support and Advice Officer will also be responsible for liaising with other OPA program areas with regard to complex advocacy matters.
About you
- Demonstrated experience in the provision of individual and short-term advocacy for people with disabilities who are at risk of, or who are experiencing exploitation, abuse, neglect, or at risk behaviour.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the Victorian human services sector, particularly an understanding of issues relating to disability, mental health and aged care service sectors.
- Demonstrated experience in promoting and protecting the right of persons with disability, including mental illness and aged related disability.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and ability to build effective relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders.
