**The Role**
The Australian Defence College (ADC) is currently seeking an experienced Work Health and Safety Manager at the APS 6 level to lead and oversee WHS functions at the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) in Canberra. Reporting to the ADC Deputy Director of Governance and WHS, the role ensures the improvement, monitoring and maintenance of WHS for all stakeholders of ADFA.

As part of your responsibilities you will be required to:

- Have a good understanding of the management of safety in a large precinct, where there are multiple shared duty holders in a complex environment.
- Develop, implement, monitor and review the Safety Management System and all associated activities in line with legislation and Defence policies and procedures.
- Develop and undertake compliance, assurance and audit reporting activities across ADFA including associated units and external parties who have shared duties.
- Deliver training and awareness programs incorporating legislative updates, safety issues and lessons learned.
- Undertake incident investigations to develop insight and improvement initiatives to enhance safety and wellbeing by analysing and interpreting root cause, trend and performance data.
- Ensure that in line with legislative requirements, communication, consultation and engagement activities align with the ADFA Safety Management System and internal and external stakeholders.
- Develop processes to ensure that relevant safety data is able to support unit and Enterprise level WHS issues.
- Ensure that there is in place a response regime that will allow for timely feedback and answers to requests and advice in a prioritised manner.
- Monitor and report all WHS incidents, near misses and investigations, and update Senior personnel in accordance with established escalation and chain-of-command protocols.
- Undertake safety risk assessments and review unit risk and hazard registers.
- Manage and mentor the WHS Officer at the APS 5 level.

**About our Team**

The WHS Manager directly supports the Australian Defence College (ADC) and Joint Capabilities Group (JCG) as Officers under the WHS Act 2011 (Commonwealth) and associated due diligence requirements. The ADFA WHS Manager position sits within the ADC WHS team and is responsible for Work Health and Safety activities for ADFA in Canberra. The WHS team supports senior leadership in Defence by providing high quality, timely and accurate advice on work health and safety matters. The position provides secretariat services for the ADFA Work Health and Safety committees.

In this role, the WHS Manager will require:

- A good working knowledge of Work Health and Safety legislation and practices in a complex shared duty environment.
- Experience maintaining and updating a WHS Management System for a large private or government organisation.
- Collaborating with and providing well-structured advice to lead and influence internal and external stakeholders.
- Working with senior staff (designated as officers under S 27 of the WHS Act).
- Planning and prioritising work to tight deadlines and monitoring implementation of the work.
- Drawing appropriate insights from data, reports and analysis.
- Representing the WHS team at safety related conventions, training and forums.
- Well-developed writing skills including briefs, reports, papers.
- Be proactive, personable, resilient and organised.
- Strong ability to work under limited supervision and track the progress of multiple tasks in a fast paced and diverse environment.
