Its officers are highly skilled at their work, which includes developing and implementing policy, negotiating international agreements, delivering high-quality international development assistance, providing professional corporate management support and delivering high quality consular and passport services to Australian travellers.
- The core capabilities of the APS4 and APS5 roles will require you to:* support senior staff in developing team objectives for short term tasks and strategic
- planning for longer-term initiatives; and- build, maintain and facilitate engagements with a wide network of stakeholders

(international networks and business contacts) to support senior officers in shaping
- domestic economic policy agendas and Australia's international engagement.
- The technical capabilities of the APS 4 and APS5 roles will require you to:
- support senior staff to provide advice across the department's development, trade

and investment programs, including technical and policy advice on economic policy,
- research and development trends;- undertake analysis on elements of moderately complex economic development

and/or trade issues and produce economic advice that supports the department's
- trade, investment and foreign policy priorities; and- leverage research methods and tools to analyse, interpret and draw

conclusions from a range of data and statistics to provide compelling and
- accurate analysis and graphics.
- APS5 officers will be expected to undertake such duties with greater discretion, and more
- autonomy and guidance compared to APS4 officers.
- The core capabilities of the APS6 roles will require you to:* contribute to the development of team objectives for short-term tasks and
- strategic planning for longer-term initiatives;- ensure that priorities and output of the work area align with business

needs, departmental objectives and longer-term strategies; and- build, maintain and facilitate engagements with a wide network of

stakeholders (international networks and business contacts) to shape
- domestic economic policy agendas and Australia's international
- engagement.
- The technical capabilities of the APS6 roles will require you to:
- leverage research methods and tools to analyse, interpret and draw

conclusions from a range of research and data to provide compelling and
- accurate analysis and graphics;- employ judgement and analytical acumen to produce economic advice and

undertake analysis on elements of complex economic development and/or
- trade issues to support the department's trade, investment, development
- assistance and/or foreign policy priorities; and- support senior staff to provide advice across the department's

development, trade and investment, and country programs, including
- technical and policy advice on economic policy, research and development
- trends.
- APS6 officers will be expected to undertake these duties with a high level of discretion and
- autonomy. An APS6 officer may also be required to supervise other staff.
- _As an EL1 specialist economist, you will be required to:_

provide leadership within DFAT including through the role as an assistant
- director of a section;
- lead complex economic analysis, advice and briefing support on domestic, global,
- regional and bilateral economic issues relevant to the department's trade, investment
- and foreign policy priorities;
- provide insight to/from international networks and business contacts to shape
- domestic economic policy agendas and Australia's international engagement;
- provide leadership to the Office of the Chief Economist's program of
- modernising data management, analysis and visualisation, using PowerBI /
- DAX and, in the medium to longer term, potentially R, Python and/or Stata
- (familiarity with these languages is desirable, but not essential); and
- influence key policy debates within the department and across the Australian
- Government, including on trade and investment, competitiveness, and
- international climate change negotiations.**The Successful Applicant**:

- Tertiary qualifications in economics or a related discipline are mandatory.
- In addition, you will generally have at least three years' experience working as an economist
in the public or private sector. Familiarity with Australia's trade, foreign and development
