The Assistant Secretary Ministerial, Parliamentary and Cabinet Branch is a key advisor to the Secretary, Chief of the Defence Force and Defence Senior Leadership on matters relating to support to Ministers and their offices, parliamentary business and cabinet-related matters. This role is one of the key points of liaison between the Ministers’ offices and the Department.

MECC coordinates much of the work of the Defence enterprise. The successful applicant therefore needs to demonstrate exceptional relationship building skills, and ability to develop strong networks across the organisation and APS more broadly. You will have experience influencing stakeholders to deliver outcomes in a high pace, high profile environment. You will have strong judgement and nous to manage competing and often changing priorities while remaining composed under pressure.

You will be a strong people leader with proven experience inspiring and empowering your team to deliver outcomes. You will have a dedicated focus on building the capability of your people as well as a positive workplace culture.

To lead the Ministerial, Parliamentary and Cabinet Branch you will require extensive knowledge of government decision-making and parliamentary processes.

As part of the Senior Leadership Group, you will play a key role in promoting and influencing a shared commitment to the strategic direction of Defence, as most recently detailed in the 2020 Defence Strategic Update. You will:

- Lead and manage a Branch practicing inclusive leadership and collaboration

- Demonstrate resilience and personal accountability for the quality of advice and delivery of results
- Demonstrate exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
