**As a Technical Services Coordinator, Life Sciences, you will**:

- Act as a coach and work with team members to facilitate growth and development in alignment with Deakin’s code of conduct and core university strategies and policies that promote a safe, sustainable and productive working environment.
- Coordinate the efficient and safe operation of teaching and research laboratories, field sites and equipment, including the management and leadership of a high performing technical support team. Develop and regularly update laboratory procedures and usage policies in line with university regulations and best practice.
- Provide Leadership in Occupational Health and Safety practices including the management of all matters relating to hazardous materials and dangerous goods, and recommend changes to work practices, where appropriate to promote high safety standards.
- Provide advice and recommendations regarding capital bids and discretionary equipment purchases, including facilitating the acquisition of equipment and materials for teaching.
- Trial new technologies and modify existing processes to ensure the optimal smooth running of teaching and research activities.
- Identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of laboratory operations, develop and maintain databases of the School’s resources while working with colleagues across the locations.
- Provide specialised and high-level technical support, training and advice to staff and students regarding equipment, policies and practices that meet the relevant legislative requirements for laboratory and field-based teaching and research.

**In a typical week, you will**:

- Ensure people responsible for implementing work priorities have role clarity, the authority to act and feel empowered and supported.
- Plan and oversee projects/activities to deliver sustainable outcomes and value within constraints of time, cost and quality whilst challenging existing processes.
- Consult regularly with staff/students/stakeholders, providing ethical advice, building new and productive relationships and responding to feedback from stakeholders regarding their satisfaction and perspective with services received with openness and transparency.
- Plan and prioritises work and critical activities appropriately and recognise barriers to achieving outcomes, finds effective ways to deal with them and evaluate progress.
- Establish and demonstrate a high level of learning, energy and commitment. Maintain personal integrity and make decisions consistent with university values.

**To be successful, you’ll have**:

- A Degree in biology or related discipline with subsequent relevant experience; or extensive experience and specialist knowledge or broad knowledge in technical or administrative fields
- Extensive experience and management expertise in technical laboratory administrative fields; or
- An equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.(biology/life science)
- Experience in occupational health and safety regulations, including dangerous goods and biological hazardous substance handling and management.
- Demonstrated ability to coordinate staff and resources.
