Engineering DOCKLANDS Full Time

Melbourne is Australia’s fastest growing city - a city that is becoming increasingly reliant on public transport networks. Since 2009, Metro proudly continues to operate and maintain a world-class train service and network through to delivering significant transport projects that will shape how Melbourne moves. With Zero Harm at the foundation of everything we do, we want everyone to get home safely. We are one team, helping to connect and shape a better Melbourne.

About the Role

The Commercial Building Inspector is responsible for providing technical expertise and support to ensure the successful handover and acceptance of civil infrastructure assets delivered through major projects, including the Level Crossing Removal Project, Metro Tunnel Project, Franchisee Projects and any internal projects.

You will be the main point of contact between the Facilities and Projects teams, overseeing the identification, management, and resolution of all defects, outstanding issues, and handover requirements in accordance with maintenance and operational standards. Additionally, you will ensure that assets are integrated into Metro’s ongoing operations in a safe, compliant, and sustainable way, supporting the long-term integrity of the network.

This is a permanent position with hybrid working, based in West Melbourne and working on-site across the Melbourne Metro Network.

Key Responsibilities

- Provide recommendations for the approval of Certificate 34s (Project Completion Certificates) and Certificate 35s (Final Operational Certificates).
- Review, assess, and approve Notices and Approvals for Excavation (NAEs) related to civil works within the Metro network.
- Prepare and maintain the Scope of Works for End of Defects Liability Period Inspections for civil infrastructure.
- Coordinate and oversee the execution of End of Defects Liability Period Inspections, interfacing with Projects and external contractors.
- Provide technical advice on infrastructure inspection, maintenance, construction, and upgrades.
- Monitor work quality, investigate asset failures, and manage corrective actions and reporting.
- Identify and assess risks, support maintenance approvals, and ensure compliance with Metro's standards.

About you
- Tertiary qualification in Civil Engineering (or equivalent discipline)
- Current registration with the Victorian Building Authority as a Building Inspector (Unlimited)
- Significant working in a similar civil infrastructure position within rail or major infrastructure sectors
- Strong knowledge of Australian Standards, Building Code of Australia and ability to interpret engineering documents
- Proven ability to assess technical risks, ensure compliance, and deliver quality outcomes
- Effective communicator with strong stakeholder engagement skills
- A valid and current full Victorian Drivers Licence
