The AWS Enterprise Networking org enables the connectivity needs for hundreds of thousands of Amazon employees and AWS data center corporate customers around the world. This organisation develops and operates the platform that Amazon's businesses rely on to grow and scale by leveraging AWS Cloud Infrastructure where-ever possible.

We are looking for a Systems Engineering Manager to help us grow our team. Our goal is to build systems that eliminate human intervention and errors; provide actionable insights in to network impairments and look for innovative ways to automate and scale our network as we expand. In this role, you will manage a team of 6-8 software and systems development engineers to develop and improve systems and automation needs across a complex and interconnected tool ecosystem, enabling networking teams to operate and scale the network safely.

Collectively working with adjacent teams and customers, your team will design, implement, and evolve the systems and automation that provide foundational services and deployment automation for the network. Your team will continuously identify areas of growth within the existing frameworks, tools, and processes to develop technical mechanisms to reduce waste and continuously improve. By reporting into the backbone organization, you will be empowered to make significant impact and improvement to our overall operational excellence.

Key job responsibilities
- Drive continual improvement in systems operations through tool building and iterative improvement.
- Define and drive projects that improve efficiency in day-to-day tasks (or automate them away completely), identifying key metrics that reflect the success of those projects, and reporting on their progress.
- Establish strong relationships with stakeholders and customers to understand and meet their need, clarify requirements, and collaboratively develop designs from ambiguous or nebulous problems at wide scale.
- Manage a highly technical team, and develop a deep knowledge of your area in order to propose new designs for wider review.
- Develop and maintain a culture of innovation and operational efficiency in the team.
- Hiring, growing and retaining engineering team keeping up with the high Amazon bar. This leader will be responsible for continuing to build an extremely high caliber team.

A day in the life
Managers in the Backbone Enterprise and Regional Engineering (BERE) organization have a wide range of responsibilities: we work with internal partners to develop and implement the next gen platforms along with the tooling ecosystems to support with these platforms driving efficiency and scalability through the automation of builds, configuration deployment, and the scaling of capacity. As our network is one of the largest in the world, there is no blue print at our scale allowing our engineers to develop solutions to the complex challenges that we face daily. We encourage durable solutions that look around corners while taking into consideration our customer needs from a cost, performance, and reliability perspective. Our team develops tooling that provides the required visibility and control of traffic across the network, while prioritizing the automatic mitigation of events to minimize the impact to our customers during events.

- Knowledge of professional software engineering practices & best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations.
