**Position Overview**

The National Executive Legal and Policy Adviser to the Deputy Principal Registrar is part of a discrete team directly assisting the Deputy Principal Registrar and other key National Operations Staff with the administration of the Courts. The Adviser works closely with the chambers of the Chief Justice and the Chief Executive Officer and Principal Registrar (CEO/PR) of the Courts.
The National Executive Legal and Policy Adviser provides critical support and assistance to the Deputy Principal Registrar. This includes carrying out high level legal and policy work, legal research, preparing complex correspondence and reports and coordinating submissions from all areas of the Court. The Adviser will also conduct research into and develop policies and protocols across a broad range of issues relating to the administration of the Courts and liaise with a range of internal and external stakeholders.
The Adviser is also responsible for providing advice, support and management of a broad range of procurement activities across the two Courts in accordance with the Commonwealth Procurement Rules and the Public Governance, Performance and Accountability Act 2013, working closely with the Finance and Procurement Team in the Courts’ Corporate Services. The role may also include assisting with the management of complex complaints, requests under the Freedom of Information Act 1982 and assessing and responding to Privacy and Public Interest Disclosure enquiries.
The National Executive Legal and Policy Adviser undertakes work activities with an awareness of their possible impact on strategic, political or operational outcomes for the Courts, and an extensive understanding of the role and responsibilities of the agency, including an understanding of the APS operating environment more broadly. They role requires the ability to work with limited direction.
This role has a wide-range of tasks and responsibilities across the two courts. The person appointed to this position will be someone who anticipates what needs to be done and shows initiative; and someone who is highly motivated and organised, efficient, able to work under pressure and possesses strong communication and interpersonal skills.
The National Executive Legal and Policy Adviser will have an important leadership role with oversight of the Executive Assistant and support staff within the Deputy Principal Registrar’s team.
