Clinical Assistant

Maintain a neat, tidy and respectful personal presentation at all times including the wearing of the Pathology Queensland branded corporate uniform.
Communicate clearly and respectfully with patients, hospital staff and laboratory colleagues to ensure correct collection of appropriate blood and non-blood specimens from inpatients and outpatients occurs for the tests requested.
Key competencies (role specific criteria)
You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the following:
- Ability to successfully perform phlebotomy on neonates, paediatric, adult and geriatric patients in a busy hospital environment.
- Demonstrated understanding of the importance of standard precautions in dealing with patients and clinical specimens.
- Ability to quickly develop a rapport with patients and clients and provide a positive focus on patient care within a hospital environment.
- Knowledge or ability to rapidly acquire knowledge of medical terminology and abbreviations, pathology test names and specimen types.
- Ability to rapidly acquire high level skills in the use of the laboratory information system (AUSLAB), the integrated electronic Medical Record (ieMR) and the Quality Information System (QIS).
- A knowledge of Microsoft Windows and Outlook or the demonstrated ability to quickly learn to use those systems.
- Proven ability to follow instructions and work conscientiously and accurately with mínimal supervision after careful instruction.
- An established history of positive teamwork, respectful behaviour and above average attendance.
- Ability to prioritise workload to meet the clinical need of patients and to ensure an efficient client-focused service.
- Ability to work in a responsible and efficient manner with and without supervision.
- Well-developed interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively and work productively in a team environment.
- Ability to function as a team member, using effective time management to achieve organisational goals with a well-developed knowledge of principles of effective team functioning.
- Ability to stand and walk for up to 8 hours and able to push a trolley to various hospital wards.
- Ability to participate in an established roster over a 7 day a week service including working weekdays, weekends, public holidays and be able to work extra time or shifts when necessary to accommodate changes in workload and service requirements.
Qualifications, registrations and other requirements
- Mandatory Certificate III in Pathology Collection
- Cert IV in Pathology Specimen Collection would be highly regarded.
