**Position Summary and Overview**

Leica Biosystems is a global leader in workflow solutions and automation for anatomical pathology (histology) to aid cancer diagnosis.

Reporting to the Director, R&D Software Engineering this role is within the Leica Biosystems Melbourne R&D Software Engineering group. The Manager, R&D Software Engineering will manage the core members of one software delivery (Scrum) team that is focused on development and sustaining of one or more software systems within Leica Biosystems medical device product portfolio, in accordance with the applicable quality management system requirements.

You will work closely with program managers, product managers and other stakeholders to deliver software capability that support and enhance Leica Biosystems products. You have overall accountability for successful delivery by your team.

**Key responsibilities**:

- Support team success in any way you can, e.g. resolve issues, help with delivery, etc
- People management: performance reviews, engagement actions, compensation planning, mentoring, career planning, recognition, performance management, etc
- Capability development of the team.
- Recruitment of skilled team members in line with program and business needs with a focus to establish a team capable of high performance.
- Forecast and track team budget.
- Plan and arrange team celebrations.
- Promote and coach the use of the Danaher Business System (DBS) within the team
- Design History File Record (document) review & approval
- Primary point of communication and escalation with program management Support release planning, risk management, VPM representative, etc

Assess team’s suitability / capability to deliver on upcoming release needs
- Represent R&D software engineering needs during product backlog prioritisation in consultation with architects, program management and product owners.
- Ensure team standard work is developed, adopted and continuously improved.
- Cross-team collaboration - i.e. align with other software engineering teams.
- Facilitate any resources (tools, instruments, etc) needed by team.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of software development processes and procedures in line with quality assurance and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure the team complies with applicable quality management system requirements while developing software enhancements.
- Ensure a standard of professionalism and cleanliness in the team’s work area.

**Selection Criteria**

**Essential**:

- Minimum 12 years of experience in software systems development.
- Meaningful background in agile development of software solutions throughout the full Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC).
- 4+ years experience in a team leadership role.
- A thorough understanding of what it takes to deliver software efficiently and effectively.
- You will be a highly effective communicator able to operate from the VP to individual contributor level.
- A driven professional, motivated to make a difference.
- Ability to work and take decisions with a high level of autonomy.

**Highly Desirable**:

- Background in product development, i.e., delivering distributable software systems
- Systems development in a strong engineering environment e.g., medical device, aerospace, automotive.
- Experience developing software in accordance with IEC 62304 and ISO 14971.
- Significant experience working as a software developer using C++ and/or C#.
- Prior experience in a delivery focused management role.
