The Department of Home Affairs is responsible for centrally coordinated strategy and policy leadership in relation to domestic national security arrangements, law enforcement, emergency management, counter-terrorism, social cohesion, the protection of our sovereignty, the integrity of our border and the resilience of our national infrastructure.
The Australian Border Force, an operationally independent body within the Department of Home Affairs, is Australia's frontline border law enforcement agency and Australia's customs service. The Australian Border Force's mission is to protect Australia's border and facilitate the legitimate movement of people and goods across it.
**Overview of the Branch and Section**:
The Department of Home Affairs (The Department) is committed to providing a safe and healthy workplace for our employees, including supports for early intervention, effective injury management and prevention strategies. The Department is also committed to creating a positive, respectful, courteous and a high performing workforce. Staff Health and Fitness Section staff are located in the Staff Health and Wellbeing Branch, Health Services Division and work across a number of areas including Triage, Early Intervention (EI), non-work related (NWR) Case Management and the Fit & Well program.
**About the role**:
Staff Health & Fitness Coordinators assist with the provision of quality, contemporary and business-focused solutions and advice to individual human resources issues for staff experiencing health and/or wellbeing issues. Staff Health & Fitness Coordinators develop and implement individualised support strategies for ill or injured departmental staff, including the Australian Border Force (ABF).
Health issues are varied and often quite complex requiring out of the box thinking to engineer and facilitate contemporaneous solutions within Departmental policies and guidelines. These issues may span across various key areas including early intervention; injury management; return to work strategies; medical retirement or other exit strategies; unscheduled staff absence; behavioural; harassment, bullying and discrimination; and, proactive intervention measures. The Section’s work is underpinned with appropriate clinical advice. Staff Health & Fitness Coordinators support both staff and business areas as part of a specialised team within the whole-of-case centralised Section in the Department. **Specific duties/responsibilities**:
- Provide effective Early Intervention-Case Management to deliver individualised, clinically underpinned health and fitness supports to injured ill staff, their managers, external medical professionals and other key stakeholders
- Engage with clinical providers to receive the appropriate clinical health advice to devise safe and sustainable return to work programs or to devise other support strategies
- Negotiate and liaise with all stakeholders to resolve conflict within complex and sensitive matters whilst managing relationships, client expectations and to engineer positive outcomes
- Independently gather expert program, service, clinical or policy information to support staff and their managers
- Collaborate with appropriate business areas to provide a multipronged service offering
- Prepare complex correspondence, briefs, reports and submissions; policy review & development; maintain excellent contemporaneous record keeping practices
- Confidentially and sensitively deal with employees’ personal information in accordance with the Australian Privacy Principles
- Reporting functions, including some data interpretation & analysis and dashboards
- Contribute to development and progression of Section initiatives and programs, health promotions, business plans, marketing strategies and the implementation of the Healthy Us Strategy.
