The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is looking to recruit **Statistical Analysts/Mortality Data Coders (APS4)** in the Health and Vital Statistics Section of the ABS.

This opportunity is for both ongoing (permanent) and non-ongoing (temporary) positions. Successful applicants can work either full-time or part-time hours from our office located in Brisbane, although a hybrid model of working from home and the office applies.

**About the area and role**

Successful applicants will join a professional team responsible for production of the national mortality dataset which is used extensively for public health research, policy and planning. Team members assist with quality assurance of key datasets, data analysis, statistical writing and other projects as required. Training in mortality coding is provided on the job, with new team members progressively becoming more involved in coding work as their skill set develops.

The Health and Vitals team consists of 25-30 people all located in Brisbane. This team is responsible for the collection, processing and reporting of information on vital events including, births, deaths, causes of death, marriages and divorces.

The team works with many stakeholders including international partners such as the World Health Organisation, data suppliers such as the Registries of Births, Deaths and Marriages and many data users in government, non-government organisations and academia.

To be suitable you should have most or all the following skills, qualities and experience:

- Strong analytical and numeracy skills and ability to develop new skill sets that support achievement of team goals.
- Demonstrated personal drive and integrity and ability to work productively as part of a diverse team.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- An understanding of, or experience working with, public health information, knowledge of medical terminology, experience with International Classification of Diseases (ICD) coding and understanding of epidemiological concepts are all highly desirable skills for these roles.
