The RNA, Proteins, and Materials Research Infrastructure Facility is located on Level 2, Ian Jacobs Building (D26) at UNSW Sydney.It is a shared facility specialising in: cell and tissue culture; protein purification; molecular biology; robotics/microfluidics; biomaterial characterisation and RNA research.

The Technical Officer will take a lead role in ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of the research laboratory. The Technical Officer will act with a high degree of independence in carrying out the duties of the role. The Technical Officer contributes to the output of the Facility through efficient day-to-day management of research equipment, infrastructure and services, and through undertaking specific administrative and technical tasks to fulfill legislated or University requirements for undertaking research in this PC2/OGTR certified facility.

The Technical Officer will, as required, liaise with all stakeholders to identify research requirements and assist in organising and/or providing commissioning of and maintenance of specialised equipment. They will provide expertise and related administrative and technical assistance to a variety of research areas, such as: cell and tissue culture; protein purification; molecular biology; robotics/microfluidics; biomaterial characterisation and RNA research

**About the role**
- **$91K - $97K (equal to $54.6k to $58.2k when adjusted for 0.6FTE pro rata)** plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
- Fixed Term - 12 months
- Part time (0.6 FTE, equal to 21 hours per week)

The position reports to the Technical Laboratory Manager and has no direct reports.

**Specific responsibilities for this role include**:

- Plan for and oversee the day-to-day operation of research facilities. This involves setting priorities and standards of service to meet requirements, and to maintain and coordinate new and existing projects and equipment.
- Advise, coordinate and deliver the training and compliance needs of all laboratory users.
- Be responsible for: chemical inventories; biological registers; chemical and biological waste; and coordinate laboratory inspections and audits, in consultation with UNSW WHS experts.
- Allocate and monitor shared resources in the Lab.
- Develop, assess and modify work practices and ensure they meet UNSW guidelines and procedures.
- Oversee the purchase, asset management, stock control and safe disposal of equipment and laboratory consumables.
- Liaise with multi faculty stakeholders to ensure the effective use of resources and facilitate collaboration.
- Implement and maintain safety systems applicable to a PC2/OGTR facility within the laboratory environment to comply with University and statutory policies, guidelines and procedures in collaboration with the HSE Advisor and Faculty WHS Coordinator.
- Oversee the management of plant and equipment to ensure compliance with UNSW HS327 Plant and Equipment Procedure and HS312 Inspection Testing and Monitoring Procedure.
- Independently manage the efficient day-to-day laboratory operations including, but not limited to:

- Managing booking systems and resource sharing.
- Authorising access to laboratories and equipment, coordinating, conducting and evaluating user training, including inductions general user oversight of the laboratories
- Coordinate the complex installation, maintenance, repairs, calibration, troubleshooting of equipment and infrastructure.
- Maintain the cleanliness and orderliness of the laboratories.
- In consultation with the relevant stakeholders, identify research requirements in terms of equipment, infrastructure, services and training to help achieve desired research outcomes.
- Provide technical advice, leadership and support for best practice of research in the laboratories.
