Job Title: Head of Data Centre Development - Australia
Location: Sydney or Melbourne, Australia
Reports To: CEO - ESR Data Centres
Job Summary:
Key Responsibilities:
- Strategic Planning & Development: Help develop and execute strategies for the expansion and development of ESR’s data centre developments in Australia, aligning with company goals and market demands.
- Site Selection & Acquisition: Oversee the identification and assessment of potential sites for new data centre developments, conducting feasibility studies and negotiating acquisitions.
- Project Management: Oversee the entire lifecycle of specific data centre projects from inception to completion, ensuring timely delivery within budget and compliance with quality standards.
- Regulatory & Compliance Management: Familiar with Australian regulatory frameworks, obtaining necessary permits and ensuring adherence to local laws, zoning regulations, and environmental guidelines.
- Stakeholder Coordination: Collaborate with internal teams and external teams in a matrixed environment, local authorities, contractors, operators, hyperscalers and investors to drive project success.
- Financial Oversight: Oversee the development of budgets and cost management as well as optimize capital expenditures to ensure financial viability. Driving approvals of new projects and advocating for equity for the Australian business
- Vendor & Contractor Management: Engage and manage third-party consultants, contractors, and suppliers to ensure project efficiency and cost-effectiveness, partnering with in-country ESR resources to maintain company-wide processes and consistency.
- Sustainability & efficiency : Implement best practices for energy efficiency, sustainability, and operational reliability in data centre design and construction.
- Risk Management: Identify potential risks and implement mitigation strategies to ensure smooth project execution.
**Requirements**:
Required Qualifications & Experience:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, Real Estate Development, Construction Management, or a related field.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in data centre industry, real estate, or infrastructure projects, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
- Strong understanding of the Australian data centre market, including regulatory and industry trends.
- Experience in site selection, land acquisition, and project feasibility assessment.
- Proven track record of managing large-scale construction projects and delivering them on time and within budget.
- Strong financial acumen, including budgeting, forecasting, and investment analysis.
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
- Ability to work cross-functionally with global teams and local/regional stakeholders.
Preferred Skills:
- Familiarity with data centre development, including site selection, design, power, cooling, and networking requirements.
- Experience in sustainability initiatives, such as green building certifications and energy efficiency practices. Strong leadership and problem-solving abilities to drive complex projects forward.
