**The Role**
Contestability Division is seeking enthusiastic individuals to contribute to the Department of Defence's key policy and national security functions to protect and further Australia's national interests.
Your role will be to strengthen Australia's national security and economic resilience by using your analytical skills to enhance Defence capability decisions. We are seeking individuals who have broad experience across financial assurance, program and project management, engineering, scheduling, commercial and procurement, policy and strategy and/or data analytics.
You will work as part of a supportive team to analyse Defence capability and investment proposals, and provide advice to the Defence Senior Leadership Group and portfolio Ministers. You will engage closely with Project Sponsors, Delivery and Enabling Groups to understand key capability outcomes, and provide advice on Defence and Government requirements in order to support projects progressing for approval.
You will analyse capability submissions using best-practice contesting methods, to provide evidence-based advice on affordability, achievability, strategic alignment and risk. You will develop briefs to inform discussions and assist in decision making, and have the opportunity to brief senior executives in preparation for key governance committees.
This role is eligible for an additional remuneration benefit known in Defence as a Building Defence Capability Payment (BDCP). This enables Defence to provide a premium, in addition to the base salary otherwise payable under the Defence Enterprise Agreement (DEA), for positions in occupational disciplines/classifications that are critical to Defence capability. For further information, please contact the contact officer.
**About our Team**
Contestability Division is within Defence's strategic centre and supports senior Defence committees by providing independent, evidence-based advice on Defence capability and business investment proposals.
In particular, Contestability provides assurance that investment proposals align with Defence strategy and Government direction, and will be delivered according to finding and schedule guidance. We are an inclusive, collaborative and creative team, leveraging our innovation and diversity to provide unbiased, honest and timely advice for Defence and government decision makers.
Contestability Division offers flexible working arrangements, including part time and job share opportunities. We are committed to upskilling our workforce, providing numerous opportunities to expand your skills and knowledge through training and development, along with opportunities to experience cutting edge Defence capabilities up close.
We are seeking highly motivated, resilient and collaborative individuals to join our Division, and contribute to our strategic goals. To succeed in these roles, you are encouraged to respectfully challenge conventional views to facilitate and enable evidence-based solutions to support capability delivery. You will have highly developed critical thinking and reasoning skills, with a demonstrated capacity to analyse complex and technical documents, identify issues, draw accurate conclusions and develop evidence based advice.
You will possess strong written, analytical and interpersonal skills, including the ability to build constructive professional relationship with senior stakeholders outside of your immediate work area. You will bring energy and integrity to the role and contribute to a culture that promotes a shared sense of purpose, while encouraging your team to make an effective contribution towards nationally significant Defence capability projects.
The ability to demonstrate strategic thinking, detailed analysis (program and financial) and strong planning skills are essential for roles at this level. The position also requires in-depth understanding of international and domestic issues, including the economic landscape in which Defence acquires and delivers complex capability projects.
