**The Role**
A rewarding opportunity has presented itself for a First Nations Community Development Officer to join our Cultural & Community Services Team.

The position contributes to raising awareness of First Nations culture within Council and the community, identify community needs of the First Nations community through social planning, consultation and liaison with community members.

You will lead the implementation of Council’s Reconciliation Action Plan and support the organisation with staging of First Nations events and programs in partnership with Indigenous and non-Indigenous stakeholders (including NAIDOC Week, National Sorry Day, Reconciliation Week etc).

This opportunity is offered on a Permanent Full-Time basis.

**Duties will include but not be limited to**:

- Support the organisational staging of First Nations events with internal and external Indigenous and non-Indigenous stakeholders, including NAIDOC Week, National Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week.
- Implement community development programs which incorporate elements of maintaining cultural heritage and cultural education.
- Convene Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) Working Group to monitor progress on actions and report to Reconciliation Australia annually.
- Liaise with internal stakeholders and support RAP implementation in a culturally appropriate manner.
- Build capacity of staff to engage with our local First Nations community and implement relevant Unit's actions in the RAP.
- Develop mutually beneficial partnerships with relevant First Nations organisations, communities and people to implement the initiatives within the RAP and community development programs.
- Provision of workshops on First Nations culture at corporate inductions and internal workshops with partnering units.
- Participate and contribute to a number of local networks including Koori Interagency, Council's Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Advisory Committee and event steering committees.
- Support First Nations groups in the Local Government Area.
- Build the capacity of local First Nations families, youth and Elders through engagement, support and advocacy and opportunities to maintain cultural heritage and connect to Country.
- Participate in social planning workshops and support actions identified to address issues impacting on First Nations people using a strengths-based community development approach

**You Will Have**
- Cultural heritage - this is an Aboriginal identified position. The position requires applicant’s Aboriginality as a genuine occupational qualification authorised by Section 14 of the NSW Anti-Discrimination Act 1977.
- Experience working with First Nations organisations, communities and people.
- Excellent knowledge of key issues related to First Nations people and the importance of connecting to Country.
- Demonstrated understanding of issues faced by First Nations communities and ability to advocate for social justice outcomes for the community.
- Demonstrated experience in coordinating, managing and evaluating community-based events and programs with a range of Indigenous and non-indigenous stakeholders.
- Experience in community engagement, particularly with First Nations communities.
- Excellent communication and networking skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Demonstrated commitment to social justice, Equal Employment Opportunities (EEO), Workplace Health & Safety (WHS) and Anti-discrimination.

This position requires you to hold a Current Drivers Licence.

Previous experience working within local government and with culturally and linguistically diverse communities is highly regarded but not essential.

The salary range for this opportunity starts at **$84,005** (Grade G, Step1) + 10.5% super.
