The UNSW Cities Institute is an independent Institute, tasked with reinventing cities for sustainable, healthy, prosperous and socially just urban futures. As the Business Manager, you will support the Director by providing operational leadership and expert strategic advice to help contribute to the Institutes overall success.

Located in the Faculty of Arts, Design & Architecture, the Institute requires a Business Manager to support the Director to achieve strategic and operational outcomes. The Business Manager will oversee a high performing team as well as work closely with partners locally and internationally to successfully execute a number of engagement and outreach programs. The Business Manager will pay close attention to various governance frameworks and continue to align the Institutes strategy with that of the Faculty and the University as a whole.

The UNSW Cities Institute is a cross faculty entity with multiple external partners. There is an extensive engagement infrastructure to support the Director to establish and maintain deep connections with scholars, business, government and the community. This includes the external Cities Institute Advisory Committee, and the internal cross-faculty Steering Committee, chaired by the Dean of UNSW Arts, Design and Architecture as the presiding faculty.

This role reports to the Director, UNSW Cities Institute Peter Poulet.

**Responsibilities**:
Specific accountabilities for this role include (but are not limited to):

- Advance, develop and maintain research partnerships within UNSW, nationally and internationally, leveraging UNSW Faculty, Philanthropy and Knowledge Exchange teams.
- Provide operational leadership and expert strategic advice to the Director on the development and delivery of the Institute’s strategic plan and the day to day running of the Institute, including planning, managing and allocating resources to achieve goals, key performance targets and the projected growth of the Institute.
- Work with the Institute Director to strategically plan, manage and direct the activities of the Cities Institute to ensure all its programs and services are appropriate, effective and sustainable in meeting agreed objectives and benefits.
- Manage the day to day activities of Institute staff, including the development and evaluation of individual performance plans.
- Manage, advise and report on the Institute’s activities including financial management, research, communications and marketing, internships and volunteers, consistent with University and Faculty policies and procedures.
- Plan and co-ordinate the successful execution of the Institute’s engagement and outreach program including committees, workshops, major events, communications, marketing, journal publications, business development, and partnership management with all other UNSW stakeholders.
- Support the Institute’s researchers in delivering high quality research including developing grant proposals, project budgets, establishing contracts, coordinating research support resources, and tracking and reporting on progress, outputs and outcomes.
- Manage the Institute’s governance framework in line with UNSW’s policies and procedures (structures and processes, policies, information management, communications, monitoring, reporting, risks and issues) including the Institute steering, advisory and research committees and other UNSW stakeholders.
- Ensure hazards and risks are identified and controlled for tasks, projects and activities that pose a health and safety risk within your area of responsibility.

**Skills and experience**:
To be considered you will hold Australian Working Rights or Australian Citizenship. Visa sponsorship is not available for this appointment.
- Appropriate degree and extensive relevant management experience in an academic or similar large and complex environment.
- Experience in financial management and proven ability to interpret financial data to provide strategic advice.
- Proven skills and experience in strategic and resource planning, goal setting and project management.
- Expertise in strategic contract consultation, strong negotiation skills and implementation with internal and external partners.
- Extensive experience successfully leading and developing teams.
- Superior communication skills and demonstrated high level interpersonal skills.
