About us
The Department of Justice and Community Safety is responsible for the supervision of children and young people in the criminal justice system and for providing strategic advice and delivering strategic outcomes to address youth crime and reduce offending.
What does Clinical Oversight and Rehabilitation do?
Children and young people with disability in youth justice need specialised services and supports so they can participate in a way that they understand, supports their rehabilitation, and reduces their risk of reoffending.
What does the Specialist Disability Advisor do?
As a Specialist Disability Advisor, you will work within the youth justice community and custodial settings to provide expert disability advice to support developmental needs, inform parole and bail planning, provide guidance on how best to support children and young people, and support National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) access.
Reporting to the Clinical Disability Manager, you will be part of a state-wide team with a multidisciplinary skill set across a range of fields and disciplines, including disability advocacy, psychology, occupational therapy, speech pathology, social work, youth work, and community services.
The work location for this position is flexible and will require regular regional travel to Youth Justice offices and custodial precincts.
What skills should a Specialist Disability Advisor have?
To be successful in this role you will have experience in case management and case work, including the development and management of client plans designed to meet the needs and behaviours of children and young people who have a disability.
- knowledge and understanding of the disability services, youth justice and child protection systems, particularly the principles and philosophy underpinning relevant legislation and the Victorian Youth Justice program
- knowledge and understanding of the Children, Youth and Families Act 2005, Disability Act 2006 and National Disability Insurance Scheme Act 2013 and associated policies and guidelines
- knowledge and understanding of child and adolescent development, and current trends and approaches to effectively support children and young people with challenging behaviours related to their disability
- a full and current driver's licence.
A qualification in psychology, occupational therapy, speech pathology, social work, community services or related field is also desirable.
You will be required to obtain a Working with Children Check (WWCC) to be maintained by the employee for the period of employment.
