**Overview of the Branch and Section**:
Marine Workforce Capability Branch is responsible for delivering the Marine Workforce Capability for the Australian Border Force (ABF) in supporting our mission to protect Australia’s borders and enable legitimate trade and travel. This includes:

- The health, welfare, and wellbeing of ABF maritime officers;
- The provision of appropriately trained personnel (either ABF or contract personnel) to crew vessels; and
- The development and implementation of recruitment and development pathways for ABF maritime officers that align with and support the approaches adopted within ABF and the Department of Home Affairs.

**About the role**:
The Marine Tactical Officer is a specialist role with skills that enable response to known or suspected breaches in Australia’s territories and exclusive economic zones. Marine Tactical Officers operate on board a range of ABF Cutters and other vessels as required. Numerous positions are being advertised.

Marine Tactical Officers conduct a range of border enforcement activities in the offshore maritime environment. This includes offshore maritime patrols and response, surveillance and deterrence activities that support civil maritime security operations.
- Attain and maintain relevant security, medical, fitness and psychometric standards and meet mandatory requirements of the role as determined from time to time
- Successfully complete the Marine Tactical Officer training program
- Swear an oath or make an affirmation
- Actively participate in career management (posting and deployments), including to roles with other ABF commands in a Border Enforcement Officer role, and
- Be uniformed and be able to wear required personal protective and personal defensive equipment.

The work you will undertake entails spending substantial time away from home for extended periods usually up to 31 days but possibly up to 36 days, on a Fly In Fly Out roster. Marine Tactical Officers must also manage and be responsive to a range of requirements, including:

- Be able to perform duties in the maritime environment including lengthy deployments on unstable platforms in uncertain and variable weather and sea conditions
- Compatible with sharing facilities, when living within the close constraints of a vessel for an extended period of time
- Be able to deploy for at least 31 days at a time with no opportunity to return to port or home
- Demonstrate flexibility and initiative in response to allocated work, including assisting in the completion of work outside of assigned responsibilities.

Deployment to vessels reflects the operational priorities of the ABF and rostering as determined by the relevant policies and procedures. Officers are expected to be flexible and agile in responding to rostering and deployment by the ABF.

**Remuneration**:
Marine Tactical Officers receive an attractive and competitive salary package whilst employed as a sea going officer. Conditions of service will be commensurate with the Department of Home Affairs Workplace Determination 2019.

Remuneration as an Marine Tactical Officer will reflect an APS 3 base salary and allowances dependent on rostering and vessel being crewed. Amongst other allowances, on successful completion of the training program, marine seagoing officers currently attract a commuted seagoing allowance of between 60-63% of base salary.

**Training**:
On commencement you are required to successfully complete a 26 week Marine Tactical Officer training program to ensure you meet the mandatory competencies and requirements of the role. This training program includes:

- Six week Border Force Officer foundational training
- Four week Basic Operational Safety Training
- Four Week Marine Skills Training Program at a Maritime Registered Training Organisation inclusive of achieving Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) qualifications;
- Certificate of Safety Training
- firefighting (inclusive breathing apparatus) and survival at sea training
- Certificate I Maritime Operations (General Purpose Hand Near Coastal)

- Confined space and working at heights training
