The remit of the **Data and Insights Branch **is to evolve the way the department produces and uses data, analytics and research, to underpin evidence-based policy development, service delivery and wellbeing outcomes. The branch fosters a culture of curiosity in data and research, establishing processes that enable the department to better understand and serve the needs of veterans and their families.
The **Data & Actuarial Analytics Section** is currently engaged in the development of many strategic projects, which are high-profile and high-value to the Department. The team uses longitudinal data and advanced analytics across an array of predictive modelling and free text analytics projects. Working collaboratively with the Australian Government Actuary (AGA), various service providers and experts, we analyse and interpret actuarial results to support evidence-based policy development. The team leverages comprehensive, veteran-centric data to understand the lifetime trajectories of clients, and to evaluate the effectiveness of new policies in improving financial and social outcomes. The team also uses information to identify specific cohorts who may benefit from early interventions to help inform targeted services and government funding.
**Duties**
- Contribute to longitudinal data and predictive analytics to analyse and interpret actuarial results.
- Leverage various machine-learning algorithms and packages to undertake text mining.
- Contribute to data linking and analysis activities to build a more complete picture of the veteran experience, including working with the Person Level Integrated Data Asset (PLIDA)
- Enhance and update the Priority Investment Approach - Veterans (PIA-V) micro-simulation to undertake actuarial projection and to support a variety of key business uses.
- Using data-driven client segmentation to identify specific cohorts which could benefit from early intervention to inform targeted services.
- Develop interactive dashboards and support business intelligence using Tableau.
- Contribute to evaluating the effectiveness of new policies in improving outcomes for veterans.
- Support the development of the Wellbeing Framework to assess whole-of-life outcomes.
- Develop and maintain stakeholder relationships, providing appropriate advice and services.
- Improve modelling and reporting outcomes, through innovative thinking and implementing best practice business intelligence concepts
**Eligibility**
- Under section 22(8) of the Public Service Act 1999, employees must be Australian citizens to be employed in the Australian Public Service (APS).
- All applicants external to DVA offered employment will be required to successfully undergo a pre-engagement screening check, even if they have a security clearance. The screening check is conducted in accordance with the Australian Government Protective Security Policy Framework requirements.
**Mandatory Requirements**
- Tertiary degree with major in Actuarial Studies, Economics, Statistics, Mathematics, Finance, Econometrics, Computer Science, Nuclear Physics, Astronomy, Astrophysics, Data Science or a closely related discipline
**Notes**
Where a non-ongoing position is offered, the role will be filled for an initial specified term of up to 23 months.
A merit pool of suitable applicants may be created which may be used to fill future ongoing and non-ongoing vacancies should they become available over the next 18 months.
