The Garvan Institute has supported genomic sequencing in Australia since 2012. As one of the five platforms of the research precinct, the Sequencing Platform offers nationally accredited short-read sequencing services for genomics and transcriptomics to clients across Australia and New Zealand.
THE OPPORTUNITY
The Laboratory Manager position is an onsite role within the Garvan Sequencing Platform and will primarily be responsible for all operational aspects of the production laboratory - including management of lab staff, oversight of laboratory processes, and alignment of processes to organisational goals. Specifically, they will ensure the quality, accuracy, relevance, timeliness and cost effectiveness of all wet lab processes, in addition to ensuring that activities, planning and challenges are well communicated to all relevant parties.
**Salary**: $105,000 negotiable + 10.5% super + salary packaging
Employment Type: 2 years full time contract

WHAT YOU WILL DO
The key responsibilities include:
- Supervise and manage production laboratory staff - including recruitment, training programs, project allocation and performance reviews- Oversee the operation and administration of the laboratory to ensure service quality is maintained- Provide advice and support to the Garvan Sequencing Platform executive management team regarding the technical operation of a Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) service- In coordination with the Principal Scientist and Quality Manager, oversee the implementation and monitoring of the quality policy ensuring that all staff act in accordance with the laboratory’s quality system, accreditation, and applicable health and safety regulations- In coordination with the Principal Scientist and Quality Manager, ensure there are adequate internal quality control methods and procedures in place for all procedures undertaken- Ensure that standard operating procedures are current and reflective of the work performed, with appropriate change control implemented where necessary- Ensure that results of work undertaken within the laboratory are accurately recorded, reviewed and reported- Communicate, ensure and review the performance and improvement of the laboratory by monitoring key indicators - including turnaround time, quality metrics and client interactions- Manage and control stock, equipment and services to the laboratory - including purchasing, repair and maintenance- Actively participate in Garvan Sequencing Platform meetings, in addition to internal and external stakeholder meetings (as required)
ABOUT YOU
The key skills and experience include:
- Bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology, Biotechnology or Genetics required- At least 5 years of experience in a research or production laboratory strongly preferred- At least 2 years in a leadership role required- Previous experience in NGS is essential (experience with Illumina technology is strongly preferred)- Experience in a regulated (ISO) environment preferred- Expert knowledge of process improvement or experimental design required- Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as within a team environment- Strong creative thinking and problem-solving skills- Proven ability to cost and budget a process is desired- Strong negotiation skills desired- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a diverse, multicultural environment required
