The School of Chemistry at UNSW is recognised nationally and internationally, for producing world-class fundamental and applied research in the field of Chemical Sciences to address real-world challenges. The School's research strengths include Health, Energy, Advanced Materials, Sustainability as well as understanding fundamental molecular properties.
The Laboratory Manager (Teaching) position is responsible for the management and operation of Teaching Laboratories in the School of Chemistry. The incumbent will provide direction and leadership to a team of technical staff tasked with running teaching laboratories to support undergraduate teaching courses and laboratory focused outreach activities. This position will liaise closely with Academic Staff and external partners (UNSW Global) to plan and allocate resources, including stewardship of School instruments and equipment associated with teaching laboratories. This role also has a strong WHS focus and is required to take a leading role with compliance and WHS requirements.
**About the role**
- **$112K - $126K** plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
- Fixed Term - 12 months (MAT LEAVE)
- Full-time (35 hours per week)
The role reports to the School Manager and has x6 direct reports.
**Specific responsibilities for this role include**:
- Independent management of teaching laboratories including but not limited to the coordination of efficient day-to-day management of equipment, infrastructure and services as well as the planning, maintenance, authorisation of access and scheduling of operations.
- Manage the teaching lab operating budgets and assist in the preparation of the School's budgeting process in relation to teaching laboratories.
- Work collaboratively with Course Coordinators and other Academic Staff to define, develop and execute teaching programs.
- Liaise with UNSW Facilities Management regarding teaching building infrastructure repairs and maintenance.
- Provide leadership and direction to School Technical staff to deliver high quality service supporting the School's teaching and research programs, managing ongoing performance and career development of the team.
- Allocation of duties and the day-to-day management of staff and student requests in the laboratories.
- Provide specialist technical knowledge and advice to the Head of School relevant to long-term strategic planning for laboratories in relation to current and future trends in teaching and/or research infrastructure and methods.
- Drive a culture of continuous improvement, evaluating existing equipment, infrastructure, service delivery and training, as well as systems, procedures and protocols, and maintaining knowledge of current and future trends and technologies, to identify opportunities for improvement.
- Provide recommendations for new methodologies and solutions to the School Manager/Academics and implement change.
- Manage the School's service relationship with UNSW Global, setting service standards and expectations and managing timely and transparent cost recovery.
- Support the School's outreach program, reporting recommendations and outcomes to the School Outreach Committee.
- Take a leading role in the implementation of WHS for teaching laboratories including, develop and implement risk management protocols and monitoring compliance.
- Ensure compliance by laboratory users with School and University policies on Work Health and Safety requirements. Provision of policy advice and collaboration with School and Faculty WHS Officers and laboratory supervisors and staff to this end.

To be successful in this role you will have:
- A degree in a Chemistry or related discipline area.
- Extensive experience in the technical management of teaching and research facilities.
- Demonstrated experience in the policy, planning, operation, and maintenance of teaching and research laboratories.
- Extensive experience managing, coaching and developing staff.
- Demonstrated expertise in the operation and maintenance of equipment and infrastructure used in the laboratories.
