About the Role
As the Head Gardener, you will take ownership of the organisation and delivery of all grounds and garden maintenance at MLC. You will develop and implement maintenance schedules, identify areas for improvement, and oversee the health and visual appeal of all landscaped areas.
This is a hands-on leadership role, requiring strong horticultural expertise, planning ability, and a proactive approach to maintaining a safe, sustainable, and inspiring outdoor environment. You’ll work closely with the Maintenance Supervisor and wider College community to ensure our campus remains a welcoming and safe space for students, staff, and visitors.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain all garden areas to a high standard of health, presentation, and safety.
- Create and implement maintenance schedules for the College grounds.
- Identify and propose improvements to garden and landscape areas.
- Control pests, diseases, and soil fertility using best-practice horticultural methods.
- Perform pruning, mulching, hedge maintenance, and weed control.
- Ensure playground soft fall areas meet safety standards.
- Manage rubbish, debris, and leaf litter removal to prevent hazards.
- Advise the Maintenance Supervisor on arborist or specialist requirements.
- Maintain awareness of College operations, scheduling gardening activities around school events.
- Contribute to small project work and support the Maintenance team as needed.
- Adherence to all College policies and demonstration of behaviours in accordance with the Child Safe Standards.
About You
You are an experienced horticulturist with a passion for creating beautiful, functional, and safe outdoor environments. You thrive in both independent and team settings, demonstrate initiative, and are motivated by excellence and continuous improvement.
Essential Criteria:
- Certificate III in Horticulture (or equivalent qualification)
- 3-5 years’ experience in a similar role
- Strong organisational and time management skills
- Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities
- Proven ability to safely operate and maintain horticultural tools and machinery
- Commitment to high standards of safety and professionalism
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks (walking 15,000+ steps daily)
- Current Working With Children Check and right to work in Australia
Desirable:
- Previous experience in a school, aged care, or similar setting
- Confidence in using technology and digital record systems
- Current Victorian Driver’s Licence
