**Who is the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator?**
The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) commenced operations in 2013 as a national entity responsible for
regulating all vehicles in Australia over 4.5 tonnes gross vehicle mass. Located in Brisbane, the NHVR minimises the
compliance burden on the heavy vehicle transport industry, reduces duplication and inconsistencies across state and
territory borders, and ultimately for the heavy vehicle business with government in Australia.

Position Description | Safety and Compliance Officer
**Environment**
Through leadership and influence, the NHVR administers a national system that delivers consistent and streamlined
regulatory services and administration to the Australian heavy vehicle road transport sector, reducing regulatory burden
whilst enabling greater safety and productivity.
The Operations Division ensures the continued and improved effectiveness of operational processes and transactions for
customers and service users of the NHVR. The Division is accountable for operational safety and compliance functions
across the NHVR.
**Primary Objectives**
The Safety and Compliance Officer undertakes high-quality frontline compliance and enforcement activities, including
inspection of heavy and light vehicles, in accordance with legislation, state-wide strategies and Transport operational
policies/procedures.
The Safety and Compliance Officer operates with autonomy within the context of their agreed work plan and makes
decisions within the limits of delegated authority. The role defers to the relevant Principal Safety and Compliance Officer
on issues that require a higher level of resolution or delegation.
**Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities**
- Ensure compliance with relevant road transport laws, regulations and policies through education and enforcement
activities including, but not limited to, vehicle roadworthiness inspections, compliance checks, accident investigation
warnings, penalty notices, breach and investigation reports.

- Deliver high quality and thorough inspections through expert use of inspection equipment, information technology

- Maintain sound knowledge of rapidly evolving laws, regulations and operational procedures, and understand the
strategic context in which inspectors operate.
- Adhere to all NHVR policies and procedures to ensure compliance with NHVR internal processes.
- Comply with WH&S policies and procedures and contribute and promote a safe and healthy work environment.
**Skills and Capabilities**
- Demonstrated knowledge of enforcement operations and road freight transport issues, and the ability to enforce
road transport laws, regulations, policies and procedures.
- Be ethical and professional, and uphold and promote the organisational values.
- Communicate clearly, actively listen to others, and respond with understanding and respect.
- Think, analyse and consider the broader context to develop practical solutions.
- Be proactive and responsible for own actions, and adhere to legislation, policy and guidelines.
**Qualifications and Experience**
- Hold relevant automotive mechanical trade qualifications acceptable to the Industrial and Commercial Training
