This position is an ‘Identified’ position which signifies that the role has a strong involvement in issues relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The successful applicant must have an understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people and an ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander People.
- Working in a fast-paced environment, the Public Affairs Officer is part of a dynamic team managing media and communications for Parks Australia.
- In this role you will bring your excellent writing and communication skills, a passion for the environment and interest in Indigenous cultures, to create engaging content that connects audiences with the natural and cultural values of our parks and reserves, drives visitation to iconic tourism destinations, and engages stakeholders with our purpose.
- You will be highly organised and have input into strategic planning, while also being able to pivot and manage day-to-day communications activities.
- Some travel may be required in this role.
**Who we are**
Australia’s natural and cultural heritage is unique. Our land and seascapes are distinctive, home to plants and animals found nowhere else in the world, and to some of the oldest living cultures on earth. These environments and cultures are an essential part of our national identity, and visitors travel from across the country and the world to experience them. The Director of National Parks (the Director) is responsible for six national parks including the Australian National Botanic Gardens, 60 Australian Marine Parks and the Heard Island and McDonald Islands Marine Reserve established under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. Parks Australia is the federal park agency that supports the Director, and is a division of the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (the Department). We work to showcase these natural and cultural wonders to the world, demonstrating to all why these places are so special, and inspiring communities to become more invested in their care and future.
CFO and Corporate Services branch provides corporate services to the division including Assurance and Governance, Strategic Policy and Coordination, Procurement, and Property, Security and IT.
The Communication, Marketing and Tourism Section is located in Canberra and works collaboratively across all divisions of Parks Australia and with Traditional Owners and other stakeholders. The section is responsible for the delivery of a range of activities including Media and Communications, Marketing, E-Commerce, Tourism Policy and Destination Planning.
**The Job**
- Developing, implementing and evaluating communication strategies for Parks Australia - including clients within our national parks, botanic gardens, Australian Marine Parks, and the Bush Blitz program.
- Building and maintaining productive relationships with stakeholders and advising clients within Parks Australia on activities including media opportunities, issues management, stakeholder engagement and effective ways to drive visitation to our tourism destinations.
- Preparing communications materials including media releases, media statements, talking points, social media and web content.
- Identifying and supporting Ministerial and general media opportunities and events.
- Preparing communications reports including daily media monitoring reports and media impact reports.

**Knowledge and experience**
- Experience working with media including managing time sensitive requests with attention to detail.
- Experience developing high-quality, engaging content for a range of audiences and platforms as part of an integrated marketing communications section.
- Sound judgement to manage complex issues.
- Ability to work with limited supervision, achieve results and meet deadlines.
- Write, edit and coordinate departmental and ministerial correspondence and briefs to a professional standard and within set timeframes.
- Work collaboratively, establishing and maintaining productive working relationships to achieve individual, team and/or organisational objectives.
**Skills and capabilities**
- Experience developing impactful media and communications strategies and materials including media releases, talking points, newsletters, social media and web content.
- Strong media experience including proactive pitching, securing media opportunities, managing issues and working to tight timeframes.
- Highly developed writing skills and attention to detail including the ability to present complex information in an engaging and straightforward manner to different audiences.
