**Introduction**
This document sets out the roles and responsibilities of the South Australian Multicultural

Commission. It provides guidance on the Commission, its purpose, functions, operations,

tenure and remuneration in accordance with requirements under the _South Australian _
- Multicultural Act 2021 _(the Act).

Commission members should be fully conversant with the business of the South Australian

Multicultural Commission and ensure compliance with all legal and statutory obligations, as per

the Act.

The Government of South Australia values the contributions of diverse communities and is
committed to ensuring our multicultural communities are well supported through quality services
and programs, supported or delivered by the Commission.

Serving on a government board, committee or statutory authority is a rewarding and productive
way to get involved and help shape South Australia.

**About the Commission**
The South Australian Multicultural Commission (SAMC) is a statutory advisory body established
under the _South Australian Multicultural Act 2021,_ that reports to the Minister for Multicultural
Affairs.

SAMC replaced the former South Australian Multicultural and Ethnic Affairs Commission when
the new Act came into operation on December 2021.

The Commission is considered a state government board, as it meets the policy definition in
Premier and Cabinet Circular 16 (Remuneration for Government Appointed Part-time Boards
and Committees).

The Commission plays an important role in:

- raising awareness and understanding of multiculturalism and interculturalism in our

South Australian community
- providing independent advice to the South Australian government about the

advancement of multiculturalism, drawing on the cultural diversity, skills and experience
of its members.
The SAMC’s vision is to achieve an open, inclusive, cohesive and equitable multicultural
society, where cultural, linguistic, religious and productive diversity is understood, valued and
supported.

The SAMC embraces the values of the South Australian public sector: Service;
Professionalism; Trust; Respect; Collaboration & Engagement; Honesty & Integrity; Courage &
Tenacity; and Sustainability.

**Functions of the Commission are:
(a) to advise the Minister in relation to the operation of the Act, and multiculturalism

generally;
(b) to advise and consult with State authorities through the Minister to ensure that there is a

coordinated approach to the advancement of multicultural affairs;
(c) to advise the Minister in relation to the needs,
