**The Role**
Are you an excellent writer and effective leader who likes to make a difference? Would you like your work to be read by senior decision makers including Cabinet, and to inform and shape the public discussion on the future of Defence? If so, this role is for you.
Land Capability Division in Army Headquarters is seeking a motivated and experienced Assistant Director to lead a team providing strategic writing and strategic communications support. Land Capability Division is a high tempo environment, and plays a central role in Army’s mission “to prepare land power in order to enable the joint force in peace and war”. This EL1 role offers a rare opportunity to work in collaboration with senior leadership to support major capability decisions and develop your skills to a higher level.
The Assistant Director Strategic Writing and Communications will lead a high-performing team in the preparation of clear, concise, strategically aligned Government submissions on highly complex, technical major capital investments. In addition, the Assistant Director will play a key role in ensuring public messaging is consistent across Land Capability Division, both by leading the production of communications products and providing guidance on messaging for public events. The role offers the opportunity to lead a high-performing team to manage sensitive stakeholder engagement and to contribute to Land Domain-level communications products. The successful applicant will also manage and monitor team workloads, monitor document delivery schedules, and provide briefings at relevant Land Capability Division meetings.
**About our Team**
The team forms part of the Land Strategic Events, Engagements and Communications Directorate within Chief of Staff Branch. Chief of Staff Branch brings together a range of central functions supporting Head Land Capability and the branches and program teams within Land Capability Division. The Branch provides specialist expertise and domain-level coordination to project and programs and coordinates support to Army senior leadership. It is an exciting and complex environment, offering a rewarding job in a supportive close-knit team.
Land Capability Division is the core of Army’s Land Capability System, and is responsible for delivering and integrating the fundamental inputs to capability that generate and sustain Australian military capability in the Land Domain. It operates in accordance with the One Defence Capability System and includes the activities conducted by Army that modernise and sustain the Army and build its future capacity. As Army is currently undergoing an historic reinvestment in land capability, this is an exciting time to join the Division.
We are looking for a driven and enthusiastic person who will thrive in a high-paced environment, where there is opportunity to directly influence the delivery of capability and support major capability decisions.
The ideal applicant will be passionate about military capability and persuasive written communication, and will have the interpersonal and stakeholder engagement skills to work with military members across eight programs and brief senior leaders.
We will assess your suitability for the role against the following selection criteria:
- Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to present complex technical information in clear and logical plain English, tailored to target audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to cultivate productive working relationships and communicate influentially with diverse stakeholders.
- The ability to focus strategically and shape strategic direction.
- Demonstrated leadership skills.
- The personal drive, integrity and resilience required to maintain a high level of performance in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
