**Who we are**
The Plant and Live Animal Exports Division works in partnership to support agricultural productivity, competitiveness, and market access for the export of live animals, animal reproductive material, plants, and plant products.

The Plant Export Operations Branch (PEOB) facilitates trade and market access through the development of technical operational phytosanitary export inspection and certification policies. The branch does this by developing and implementing policies and guidance materials that ensure Australian horticulture, grain and other plant-based exports meet Australia's export legislation, international obligations and importing country conditions. The branch has a key role in advancing Australia's market access priorities by actively engaging in overseas market access negotiations. The branch works with all participants in the export pathway to continuously improve the export framework and ensure expert advice and support is available to the horticulture and grain export industries. In addition, the branch administers the development and training of authorised officers to conduct inspections.

The Plant Export Reform Program is a reform focussed program for Plant Exports Operations Branch that aims to deliver projects and legislative reform that reduce red tape and recognise alternative assurance pathways to achieve regulatory outcomes for the department.

**The Job**
The main duties of the position includes:

- supervising a small team, ensuring they maintain or develop necessary legislative expertise
- preparing decision briefs, formal correspondence, and legislative instruments
- maintaining an in-depth understanding of relevant legislative frameworks and ensuring that team members are aware of and operate within these frameworks
- engaging, liaising, and working with stakeholders about complex legal matters
- coordinating of legal advice on behalf of the branch
- building productive relationships with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders
- establishing and maintaining an appropriate project management approach to monitor consultation and implementation activities against key milestones.

**Knowledge and experience**
You will be motivated, forward-thinking, and able to work efficiently and collaboratively individually and in a team. Previous experience in the regulation of exports is not essential, however you will possess relevant legislative skills and experience in legal matters. The successful applicant will:

- have experience in the development of legislative amendments, including liaising with stakeholders and providing briefings
- have experience engaging effectively with internal and external stakeholders through a variety of forums and consultations
- have experience supervising staff or managing small teams.

**Mandatory qualifications**
A Bachelor’s degree in law (or equivalent) is essential
