**The Role**
Defence Finance Group (DFG) provides independent and contestable financial analysis, advice and assurance to Government capability submissions, as well as independent financial support, management and reporting on Defence and Government financial matters.

You will be a part of a team of professionals delivering accurate, timely and high quality financial analysis and advice. You will have diverse experience and skills in disciplines including finance, policy analysis and advice. As an APS 5 Financial Analyst in Capability Advice and Analytics Branch, you will operate within a dynamic environment and undertake a range of financial analysis tasks and activities across Capability Project’s Acquisition and Sustainment Budgets. You will support the department in undertaking analysis and shaping advice for senior leaders and colleagues across Defence. You may also have engagement with central agency stakeholders including the Departments of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, Finance and the Treasury.

You will be committed to supporting the business deliver outcomes through your advice and the provision of accurate, timely and high quality financial information, to assist Group and Service decision making to deliver Defence objectives and Defence Strategic Review outcomes.

**About our Team**
Our team is diverse but has a central view of Defence’s finance - especially in supporting the management of the Integrated Investment Program Budget. We also play a centralised support role to Defence and Government through leading financial activities that support them in making critical financial decisions on the future of Defence capability investment. These activities provide Defence senior leadership with trusted independent financial advice and assurance on the Integrated Investment Program.

The Integrated Investment Program invests approximately $43 billion a year into complex projects and its finances require close management to meet public expectations. Information you provide will be used to support decisions of national significance, and help shape major national operations and initiatives. This is achieved by the team providing:

- Financial advice to the Chief Finance Officer and Senior Officials on Cabinet and Ministerial submissions - in the context of the individual submission and the department’s financial position.
- Critical financial support to major capability/budget activities including the Defence Structure Review, Force Structure Plan, Defence Capability Assessment Plan and Bi-Annual reviews of Defence’s capability acquisition and sustainment plan - the Integrated Investment Program.
- Broad engagement with key stakeholders, both internally and externally of the Department.
- Building financial acumen of staff supporting capability Cabinet and Ministerial submissions.
- Shaping related policies.
- Responses to Integrated Investment Program audits of financial management.
- Improvement focus, strong results orientation, and seeks to add value through improving processes and systems.
- Ability to analyse and interpret complex information and provide advice.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to influence across a range of stakeholders. This includes researching alternative positions and presenting options effectively and persuasively.
- Problem-solving abilities based on a questioning mind and an ability to think laterally.
- Manage or contribute to budget preparation and financial performance monitoring and reporting in accordance with Defence objectives.
- Ability to undertake key budgeting and forecasting tasks using the financial systems and identifying information/data issues for remediation or escalation.
- Develop and maintain a service mentality to assist our business colleagues in their role, responding to queries and assisting them as required.
- Use knowledge and experience of financial management to provide advice on Defence and government financial matters.
