The Department of Home Affairs is responsible for centrally coordinated strategy and policy leadership in relation to domestic national security arrangements, law enforcement, emergency management, counter-terrorism, social cohesion, the protection of our sovereignty, the integrity of our border and the resilience of our national infrastructure.

The Australian Border Force, an operationally independent body within the Department of Home Affairs, is Australia's frontline border law enforcement agency and Australia's customs service. The Australian Border Force's mission is to protect Australia's border and facilitate the legitimate movement of people and goods across it.

**Overview of the Branch and Section**:
**About the role**:
The team is building from the ground up and we are looking for people who can be strong influencers of the way the team operates through a positive attitude and dynamism. We are after people with economics experience, or other social sciences, to solve complex policy problems with strong analytical frameworks. The role is an opportunity to learn from economists with vast experience in the public and private sector, but also to help shape the role of economics in the portfolio. From cyber security to disrupting trans-national and serious organised crime, the role will help Home Affairs keep Australians safe and the economy strong.

You are able to take broad and specific direction, and use this to scope and develop strong qualitative and/or quantitative analysis. If you are a lateral thinker who is driven by contesting conventional wisdom, by robust and rigorous debate, and by building a strong culture of curiosity within a team, we want to hear from you.

**Specific duties/responsibilities**:

- Work as part of a small team to deliver analysis in line with the Section work plan. You will not be afraid to take on complex tasks, and will work hand-in-hand with senior economists to identify risks
- Build relationships across the Home Affairs portfolio and more broadly across relevant Government agencies to help shape and deliver on policy outcomes for Home Affairs
- Contribute to a strong culture within the team that rewards critical-thinking, problem-solving, and builds the reputation and influence of the Section
- Work to build economic literacy within the Organisation, by keeping across economic trends and monitoring qualitative and quantitative research relevant to your work
- Broadly monitor economic developments, including economic conditions and new advances in research and economic theory, integrating these developments into the products and work plan of the Section.

**Role requirements/qualifications**:
**_Desirable:_**
- Bachelor’s degree or higher with a substantial focus on economics or other social sciences
- Experience in economic analysis, ideally with a focus on analysis of Government policy or programs.

**_Preferred:_**
- Experience supervising economic staff, including developing and mentoring junior staff
- Working proficiency in using Cost Benefit Analyses or other decision-making frameworks to inform policy decisions.

**Applicant response**:
Please prepare a one-page Applicant Response in relation to the advertised role, outlining:

- How your skills, knowledge and experience will be relevant to this role
- Why you are interested in the role and what you can offer us
- Any specific examples or achievements that demonstrate your ability to perform the role.

**How to apply**:

- Your CV
- Your Applicant Response document
- Details of referees
- A copy of your qualification
- Include your full name and the Requisition Number - **id** in the footer of any documents being uploaded.

**Eligibility and Specific Conditions of Employment**

To be eligible to work with the Department of Home Affairs you must:

- Be an Australian Citizen
- Obtain and maintain the required AGSVA clearance
- Obtain and maintain a current Employment Suitability Clearance
- Satisfy a probation period
- Undergo a health assessment (if applicable).

**Technical Assistance**

**Notes**

Remuneration: The Department offers an attractive remuneration package, including salary, superannuation benefits and flexible working conditions appropriate to the level of the position.
