The Department of Home Affairs is responsible for centrally coordinated strategy and policy leadership in relation to domestic national security arrangements, law enforcement, emergency management, counter-terrorism, social cohesion, the protection of our sovereignty, the integrity of our border and the resilience of our national infrastructure.

The Australian Border Force, an operationally independent body within the Department of Home Affairs, is Australia's frontline border law enforcement agency and Australia's customs service. The Australian Border Force's mission is to protect Australia's border and facilitate the legitimate movement of people and goods across it.

**Overview of the Branch and Section**

The Integrity and Professional Standards Branch is accountable for the Department’s Professional Standards and Integrity Frameworks. The Branch is responsible for integrity policies and works with internal stakeholders to build a positive culture through values and behaviours.

We:

- manage the Department’s awareness and compliance with the Integrity and Professionals Standards Framework
- deliver the Department’s personnel security function through employment suitability screening and security vetting
- manage integrity related complaints and allegations
- provide corruption detection and prevention capability through an integrity intelligence function
- investigate suspected breaches of the APS Code of Conduct and conduct criminal investigations
- conduct drug and alcohol testing.

The Personnel Security and Suitability Section is responsible for continuous assessment of ongoing suitability of the Department's personnel access to Australian Government resources, and manage the risk of malicious or unwitting insiders.

**About the role**:
The Assistant Director Personnel Security section is a full time, Canberra based position that reports to the Director, Personnel Security and Suitability. The occupant is responsible for coordinating a number of activities including as the facilitation and management of security clearances for staff and external service providers, and communication and liaison with internal and external stakeholders.

The successful applicant will manage a small team of assessors and provide administrative oversight of the Security Clearances section. They will undertake policy development and provide high level advice. The section is looking for a highly motivated person. Experience in personnel security and a thorough understanding of the current Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF) and policies is preferred.

**Specific Duties**:
The Assistant Director will be responsible for:

- Ongoing liaison with the Australian Government Security Vetting Agency (AGSVA) on clearances the Department has requested.
- Liaison with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade concerning the Department's overseas employed staff.
- Developing departmental personnel security policy consistent with the requirements of the PSPF.
- Providing security clearance advice to staff, contractors and other stakeholders.

**Skills/Qualifications**:
Experience in an Australian Government personnel security environment is desirable.
