**Who we are**

The Water Policy Division provides leadership and strategic policy to ensure the sustainable future of our rivers, wetlands and groundwaters, and the people who depend on them. The Division supports water reform initiatives in the Murray-Darling Basin and leads national water reform - working to future-proof Australia’s water resources and provide support to First Nations in our national water story.

The Engagement and Visual Communications Section provides engagement advice and services to water executive, focusing on strategic planning, implementation, and communication. The team lead the engagement strategy and delivery on Basin Plan implementation, legislative reforms, and Nature Positive Plans. Services include engagement strategy development, web and social media content, event coordination, webinars and Visual Communication and Graphic design, ensuring effective outreach and stakeholder involvement across the entire water group.

**The Job**

The Assistant Director Graphic Design has direct supervisory responsibilities for APS level staff and is expected to build strong relationships with staff in the division the Commonwealth water family and with delivery partners. Duties for the role include:

- Manage a small team and its workflow to deliver high-quality and timely design collateral for the department by:

- conceptualising and producing materials to communicate policy and program messaging through a range of mediums such as brochures, posters, newsletters, reports, social media, website, infographics and presentations.
- providing creative design advice to our business areas to support the development and implementation of engagement and communications strategies.
- producing materials to support the division’s internal communication, culture, and capability strategy implementation.
- evaluating the effectiveness of communication and/or engagement materials to ensure continual improvement.
- Provide support for the cataloguing and management of assets, including managing records and metadata.
- Develop materials that are tailored and relevant to different audiences.
- Participate in procurement processes relating to design projects.
- Provide timely advice and support to divisional teams regarding stakeholder and communication materials including stories for internal channels and web content.
- Positively contribute to the section’s leadership cohort.
- Manage and lead team outcomes, monitor progress and follow through to deliver quality outcomes.

**Knowledge and experience**

The successful applicant will have the following;
- Demonstrated ability to interpret and define creative briefs and deliver high-quality executions from concept development through to final production.
- Possess experience in effectively negotiating with teams and delivering expert advice on matters pertaining to best practices in design.
- Demonstrated highly developed graphic design skills (both technical and conceptual) with the ability to translate designs and concepts across a variety of media.
- Experience in developing and working within a government department’s (or equivalent’s) standards and guidelines.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability build and foster relationships with branch teams and internal client areas.
- Ability to clearly and proactively communicate with individuals across multiple teams and departments.
- Demonstrated experience working under limited direction and exercising sound decision making and judgement.
- Proficiency in arranging and building teams that thrive in high-output environments.
- A proven track record of implementing efficient processes to establish a comprehensive job tracking and archival system that ensures seamless end-to-end workflow management.
- High level of skill in both the Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Demonstrated experience working with a high level of autonomy under broad direction to manage a small team and workflow in the delivery of quality graphic design and branding outcomes.
- Experience in developing, coaching and mentoring employees, including performance management, conflict resolution and identification of training needs.

**Skills and capabilities**
- Strong capability in providing expert branding advice to the Executive, internal clients and communications teams, contributing to and supporting the strategic branding direction of the department.
- Proven ability to lead and deliver graphic design projects, including supervising graphic designers and producing work as a graphic designer as needed.
