About the Business Unit
The Aboriginal Justice Group of the Department of Justice and Community Safety (DJCS) is committed to driving systemic change in the justice system, to deliver better outcomes for Aboriginal Victorians. The group works in partnership with Victorian Aboriginal communities and is guided by principles of Aboriginal self-determination.
The Stolen Generations Reparations Unit (SGRU) sits within the Aboriginal Justice Group and was established in January 2022 to deliver the Stolen Generations Reparations Package (Package) in Victoria. The team is committed to delivering a reparations process that is fully supported, accessible, transparent and trauma informed.
About the Role
The role operates within a complex and dynamic environment that requires a working understanding of cultural safety, may involve direct contact with applicants, the capacity to work with empathy and care with staff who directly support applicants with lived experience of trauma, and the willingness to adapt and respond to program needs that may sit across other functions within the SGRU. Core to being successful in this role will be your ability to deliver on the abovementioned responsibilities with care and empathy.
**Some of your duties will include**:
- Lead a multi-disciplinary research and assessment team to ensure delivery of high quality, consistent and timely assessment outcomes in accordance with the Package's objectives.
- Provide advice, direction and mentoring to staff undertaking research and assessment work to ensure the delivery of research and assessment functions, as well as the development of staff.

About you
**To be successful in this role, you will have**:
Excellent knowledge of Aboriginal culture and society and understanding of historical and contemporary issues facing Stolen Generations and Aboriginal Victorians.
Demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with members of the Victorian Aboriginal Community.
**Qualifications**:
- A relevant qualification from a recognised tertiary institution or professional experience undertaking historical research is desired.
- Experience working in redress schemes, social policy, legal policy and/or senior leadership roles will be well-regarded.
