About the role

Natural Hazards Research Australia (the Centre) is driven by its mission to work with participants and the community on research that is useful, actionable and supportive of better decision-making to save lives and protect property.

The Centre has no formal head office and operates through Nodes located in Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney.

Reporting to the Research Program Delivery Lead, the Node Research Manager will work as part of a national team on common issues, to ensure that the research program meets the needs of end-users, from project initiation through to research implementation.

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate strong skills and experience in extensive stakeholder engagement, partnership development and project and contract management.

Tertiary qualified, you will bring strong people and relationship management capability, sound analytical, conceptual and project management skills and knowledge of and familiarity with research organisations such as university research teams, cooperative research centres or government departments and agencies.

About Natural Hazards Research Australia

Natural Hazards Research Australia (the Centre) is Australia’s national centre for natural hazard resilience and disaster risk reduction. The Centre addresses the major challenges arising from natural hazards, including bushfires, floods, cyclones, heatwaves, storms and other hazards. The Centre undertakes research that promotes resilience to the impacts of natural hazards and reduces disaster risk, supporting the needs of a variety of critical stakeholders – including emergency service agencies and communities – in mitigating impacts of, responding to and recovering from disasters caused by natural hazards.

Selection criteria

Specific knowledge and experience required:

- University degree, preferably in an area relevant to natural hazards science and/or emergency management, or equivalent work experience.
- Strong skills in project management, including a demonstrated ability to plan and organise work efficiently and to operate effectively in an environment characterised by short and often conflicting time frames.
- Experience in partnership or stakeholder engagement/management roles.
- Well-developed written and verbal communication skills.
- Highly developed interpersonal skills, together with the ability to liaise effectively and build and maintain strong relationships with a diverse group of stakeholders and senior leaders.
- Sound conceptual and analytical skills, including the ability to identify issues, manage solutions and develop appropriate solutions.
- Highly developed skills in Office and other related programs.
- At least 2 years’ experience in a similar, or related role.
- Knowledge of the workings of government departments and agencies.
- Knowledge of the workings of universities or research organisations.
- Experience working in, or with, organisations involved in disaster and emergency management.
- A self-starter able to work independently.
- Able to thrive in a remote working environment with staff and stakeholders dispersed nationally.
