About the Role

The Modelling Analyst is responsible for the development and operation of sophisticated models and tools to support Wholesale Markets and other AGL stakeholders. This includes modelling of supply/demand, pricing and mid to long term operational strategies across all fuels and domains that AGL operates in. They will also be responsible for the research, synthesis, and communication of wider market information relevant to AGL’s wholesale operations.

This role along with the broader Portfolio Growth team delivers the insights and analysis that drives the strategic direction and decision-making processes in AGL and in the development and implementation of market leading value creation strategies. They work closely with key stakeholders in Wholesale Markets and the broader AGL, including New Energy, Group Operations and Finance to provide the analytical rigor and support for their strategic decisions.

Your key responsibilities will be:

- Operate, evaluate, develop and maintain sophisticated models and tools to undertake analysis in the markets in which AGL operates. This includes quantification of the fundamental inputs in each market, understanding of the underlying dynamics and AGL’s place in each market
- Support AGL’s strategic direction and decision making processes by providing the analytical rigor for decisions to be made from the best available information
- Identify and assist in developing opportunities for growth in the AGL portfolio by providing high-quality modelling of markets and AGL’s position therein
- Research and communicate wider market events and communicate to relevant stakeholders. The primary purpose of this information is to provide wider market information to allow Wholesale markets to assist in driving the development and implementation of value creating strategies
- Prepare reports and/or presentations that document the analysis and/or the research conducted. The report and/or presentation will not only be informative but will be required to provide persuasive elements, such as recommendations, suggestions, or other motivating conclusions that indicate possible future actions the report reader might take or require further inquiry/investigation
- Suggest and implement improvements and/or develop new ideas in modelling markets. These will be driven by mathematical and/or physical principles
- Effectively engage stakeholders in order to provide timely information in regard to expected market outcomes and scenarios
- Build models that can be used to create trading and optimisation systems for various fuels, which will allow trading and optimisation of positions in the mid to long term
- A tertiary qualification in a quantitative discipline preferred

About You

To be successful, you’ll have:

- Operations Research, Mathematics, Engineering, Statistics, Physical Science, Econometrics)
- Relevant experience within an energy trading company in a relevant area desirable. Mathematical modelling experience in another field or postgraduate study in modelling/optimisation also considered
- Commodity market experience preferred
- Proven ability to understand complex problems and design innovative solutions
- Strong Numerical skills
- Computer/IT skills
- Highly autonomous with the ability to take initiative, influence and drive result
- Creative/Imaginative skills - The ability to see linkages between apparently unrelated matters. Intellectual curiosity. Ability to develop and deploy new or unusual or creative approaches to problem solving. A desire for continual learning and development
- Writing skills - Clear, concise, accuracy of grammar, punctuation, spelling. Wide vocabulary - but with the ability to use the simplest possible terms to convey the desired message
- Presentation skills - This role may be required to communicate in larger or public forum; however visual communication of complex concepts is required. (graphics, charts, effective PowerPoint skills)
