**What is the Jane Austen Literacy Foundation?**

Founded by Caroline Jane Knight, Jane Austen’s fifth great niece, the Jane Austen Literacy Foundation is a registered not for profit organisation run by volunteers. The Foundation connects a world-wide grass roots community of people who believe in the power of literacy and want to help those who need it, particularly at this time of international education crisis.

The Jane Austen Literacy Foundation is searching for a literacy expert to join its management board. The position suits an individual who is passionate about literacy and learning, has experience in the education sector and wants to help make a difference.

It is a great opportunity for the right individual to join a global team of volunteers and advance their interest in literacy and governance in a supportive environment.

About the position

The Foundation is seeking a fifth board member to assist in the oversight of Foundation and provide mission-based leadership and strategic governance.

While day-to-day operations are led by Founder and Chair, Caroline Jane Knight, the Board is a partnership, and the appropriate involvement of the Board in strategic planning and oversight is both critical and expected.
- Reviewing and providing advice to the Chair, to develop and implement the Foundation’s strategic plans
- Reviewing outcomes and targets, evaluating impact and effectiveness
- Approving annual budgets, audit reports and material business decisions
- Being informed of and meeting all legal and fiduciary responsibilities
- Assisting the Chair in identifying and recruiting other Board Members
- Ensuring board resolutions are carried out
- Serving on committees taskforces and taking on special assignments appropriate to your skill and areas of interest
- Representing the Foundation as an ambassador
- Ensuring a commitment to diversity on the Board and the Foundation
- Extensive professional experience and credibility within the literacy and education sector
- A commitment to the Foundation’s mission to connect through literacy and support literacy in developing communities
- Not for profit board experience desirable, but not essential.
- Good communication skills and a natural affinity for cultivating positive relationships
- Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a passion for improving the lives of the Foundation’s beneficiaries

The Jane Austen Literacy Foundation is run entirely by volunteers. Service on its Board of Directors is without remuneration.
