Adelaide Region SA, Australia The University of Adelaide Full time

The Hospital Research Foundation Group Palliative Care University of Adelaide Scholarship is established by The Hospital Research Foundation with The University of Adelaide to support a full-time PhD student to undertake research examining culturally and linguistically diverse experiences and perspectives of end-of-life care. Approximately 26% of Australians were born overseas, and almost 40% of migrants from non-English speaking countries are aged 50+years. However, individuals from such backgrounds face substantial barriers that limit access to appropriate palliative care and end-of-life care.

This project will put the person (patient, family, carers) at the centre of the research, to identify palliative care needs and priorities, and to capture factors (e.g., events, beliefs, personal and social issues) that shape how and why patients and families from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, make end-of-life decisions. This project will contribute to the improvement of access to and delivery of palliative care services in culturally and linguistically diverse communities in South Australia.

The project is part of the Palliative Care Research Collaboration (PCRC), which is a five-year Statewide project funded by The Hospital Research Foundation Group - Palliative Care. The program is aimed at improving access to and delivery of services for culturally and linguistically diverse communities, rural and remote areas, and those experiencing low socio-economic status, who are dealing with a life-limiting illness, to help them live as well as possible for as long as possible. This specific PhD project is focused on research examining experiences and perspectives of end-of-life care for South Australians from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

The project will involve a mixed methods approach and will allow the student to develop skills in consumer collaboration, intervention development (co-design), quantitative evaluation and qualitative interviewing and analysis, literature review, ethics, project management and interpersonal skills. Due to the collaborative nature of this project, you will also establish connections with academics, clinicians, industry experts in palliative care, community organisations, advocacy groups and patients and their families at the end-of-life.
