Scientific/technical Officer

The Scientific/Technical Officer provides
technical expertise within a highly professional
technical team in support of the Faculty’s
academic endeavours. The role is responsible
for the effective, safe and sustainable
operation of a range of laboratory facilities
and specialist equipment.
The role requires significant discipline specific
knowledge to engage with and provide high
quality technical support to academics and
students within relevant disciplines.
The incumbent will maintain awareness of
current and emerging support requirements
and will contribute to the continual
improvement of technical services supporting
the Faculty’s Learning and Teaching and
Research programs.
The Scientific/Technical Officer will be required
to work in collaboration with other technical
staff to provide an integrated and highly
responsive support service which ensures that
students have the benefit of a high quality
learning experience.
This position reports to the Supervising
Scientific/Technical Officer for supervision,
workload management and for Performance
Planning and Review (PPR).
**Key responsibilities include**:
- Provide an outstanding level of
contemporary technical support for
undergraduate teaching, workshops,
research and other University sanctioned
activities (e.g., open days and external
engagement) in Cellular Biology.
- Maintain operational requirements for
teaching and research spaces in line with:
o University’s compliance framework
- HSE requirements
- Best practice standards for
relevant laboratories or teaching
spaces
- Best practice standards for
facilities aligned with relevant
discipline areas
- Develop and maintain effective and trusted
working relationships with the academic,
technical and professional staff within the
designated discipline area.
- Maintain laboratory consumables, provide
logistics support, fault finding and
rectification, and participate in relevant
asset management procedures.
- Maintain accurate records as required
under policy, for example, maintenance,
health and safety, and chemical and asset
registers.
- Participate in laboratory events, visits and
community engagement activities.
- Develop and maintain relevant operational
documentation, including but not limited to
standard operating procedures, business
case requests and technical reports.
- Engage in opportunities for professional
development to ensure knowledge and
skills are aligned with contemporary
industry practice, including but not limited
to additional on the job training, rotation
through other roles and active participation
in development activities.
- Compliance with health and safety
policies, procedures, hazard reporting and
safe work practices relevant to the
requirements of the local work
environment.
To ensure job flexibility the successful
- appointee may be required to:
- perform any other duties as nominated by
the University consistent with the relevant
classification descriptors detailed in the
Enterprise Agreement. Staff undertaking
any new duties will receive training;
- participate in job rotation or multiskilling in
consultation with their supervisor;
- work across campuses

This appointment will be offered on an
ongoing, full-time basis.

Selection Criteria
1. Education, training and/or relevant
experience equivalent to completion of a
Bachelor degree in relevant field; an
Associate Diploma level qualification with
at least two years subsequent relevant
work experience; or an equivalent
combination of relevant experience,
education, or training.
2. Well-developed interpersonal skills
including the ability to effectively connect
and collaborate with colleagues and work
in teams.
3. Demonstrated ability to embrace and
participate in change and to effectively
organise and prioritise work in order to
meet deadlines and competing priorities,
without compromising quality in a technical
environment.
4. Well-developed problem solving skills
including the ability to contribute to
reasoning and judgement in the resolution
of work issues.
5. Demonstrated understanding of theoretical
aspects and experience in the practical
techniques, as well as the use of the
specialised laboratory equipment
associated with these techniques, where
relevant.
6. Demonstrated ability to accurately review
and interpret instructions of a conceptual
nature; to relate relevant knowledge to
provide maintenance and repairs to
equipment, and to produce technical
reports, communications and
documentation to a high standard.
**Remuneration and Benefits**
- The classification for this position is Higher
- Education Worker Level 5 (HEW5) which has
- an annual remuneration range of $83,609 to
- $94,271 pa. Which is inclusive of an annual
- salary range of $70,650 to $79,660 pa, 17%
- superannuation, and leave loading.
