The Medically Supervised Injecting Room is an anonymous service that provides a setting for supervised injecting, on-site clinical services as well as access to a range of health and social support services. As a service, the Medically Supervised Injecting Room reduces overdose deaths and non-fatal overdose-related harms, reduces ambulance attendances and emergency department presentations related to overdose, assists in reducing the spread of blood-born diseases including HIV and hepatitis C, and also provides a gateway to health services including mental health and drug treatment services.
The role suits a medical practitioner with a background in general practice, addiction medicine or addiction psychiatry. Subject to qualifications, the appointee may contribute to the on-call roster of Medical Supervisors.
**Roles and responsibilities include, but are not limited to**:
- Provide clinical services to clients accessing the MSIR.
- Seek, record and consider feedback to improve the quality and effectiveness of service delivery.
- Maintain a high standard of conduct and work performance to promote MSIR’s reputation with key internal and external stakeholders.
- Nurture collaborative relationships based on NRCH values across the organisation and with other local community groups and provider organisations.
- Support the delivery of clinical care for MSIR clients, including opioid pharmacotherapy, BBV and other medical issues as required.
- Maintain appropriate clinical notes of all medical services provided.
- Provide staff at the MSIR with appropriate clinical advice.
- Support processes required to ensure that the operations of the MSR meet all required accreditation standards.
**Key Selection Criteria**:
Essential qualifications, attributes and skills include, but are not limited to:
- Registered Medical Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
- Relevant medical/clinical qualifications and experience.
- Maintain up to date CPR and/or First Aid training
- A demonstrated interest and commitment to addressing health inequalities and creating an organisation of influence for the most disadvantaged
- Thorough knowledge of relevant health and community services for people who use drugs, or ability to acquire this knowledge rapidly.
- Ability to engage with vulnerable people who may exhibit complex and challenging behaviours in a low threshold service.
- Applied knowledge of current harm reduction policies and practices, relevant Government AOD policy, the National Drug Strategy, National HIV strategy frameworks and implications at a state and local level.
