
Principal Science Technician

**The opportunity as our Principal Science Technician you will**:
- Work cooperatively in a multidisciplinary team of scientists, technical and support staff, to support research and development into innovative methods for eradication of the red imported fire ant by providing high-level technical specialist services and advice.
- In leadership of a small team of Science Technicians, manage and undertake field and laboratory-based scientific research relevant to invasive ants, including, planning and execution of experimental trials, collection of data and/or specimens, data management processes, analysis and interpretation of complex data sets in collaboration with data analysts, and providing detailed project reports to communicate findings.
- Lead the organisation of specific field and laboratory-based projects and activities, including development of project plans in collaboration with principal scientists, staff co-ordination, acquisition and maintenance of scientific equipment and materials and the collection and management of scientific data to ensure that research is undertaken in an effective and efficient manner.
- Manage relevant administrative and compliance aspects of field and laboratory
- based research including Workplace Health and Safety, Standard Operating Procedures, Safety Data Sheets, chemical stores and audits, and reporting requirements.
- Significantly contribute to ongoing improvement, validation, and currency of scientific practices within the National Red Imported Fire Ant Eradication Program and assisting in the communication of scientifically robust data to relevant internal and external stakeholder groups, including co-authoring scientific papers for publication.
You may also have
- Experience in invertebrate taxonomy and diagnostic processes, and the maintenance of live insect cultures.
- Experience in design and execution of field experiments and knowledge of various trapping methods used to monitor invertebrate communities.
- Experience in ecological population metrics, including diversity and population indices and species richness and evenness assessments.
- Experience using programs such as ODK, Survey123, ArcGIS and QGIS with a demonstrated knowledge of Python beneficial.
Mandatory qualifications
- Diploma in Biological Science from a recognised tertiary institution, or equivalent academic qualifications.
- Current unrestricted C-Class Driver's Licence
