Job Description

An exciting opportunity exists for a Research Assistant to join the Tye-Din Laboratory in the Immunology Division at Australia’s pre-eminent biomedical research institute.

About the Position

Coeliac disease is a prevalent immune illness caused by gluten. Our team aims to understand the molecular basis for coeliac disease by studying the T and B cell immune responses to gluten in human participants with the aim of developing better therapies and diagnostics for patients.

A major goal of our research group is to develop and optimise a suite of immunological readouts to facilitate assessment of immune responses. The role will involve running, optimising and validating these assays for use in both academic research projects and industry-sponsored human clinical trials.

The appointee will report directly to Associate Professor Jason Tye-Din at WEHI.

Key responsibilities will include:
Conduct research:
- Key techniques include: isolation of primary cell populations and tissue culture, including T cell cloning; electrochemiluminescent cytokine assays, ELISpot and ELISA; flow cytometry including multicolour analysis and tetramer staining; and RNA/DNA isolation and genotyping- Handle a range of human samples including blood, small intestinal biopsies, stool and urine- Maintain databases and sample archives; data acquisition, handling and recording; preparation of data and manuscripts- Follow strict protocols as required for quality management of clinical trial samples

Administrative and laboratory support:
- Ordering and maintenance of Lab and Division consumables- Assist with rostered divisional duties- Maintain a repository of protocols and results- Support the training of students and new staff on data collection, instruments and lab safety- Manage operations and communications within the research group

Selection Criteria

Personal qualities:
- Meticulous attention to detail, a high level of organisation and record keeping, and being time flexible.- High degree of independence- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a capacity to work well in a team-oriented environment.

Knowledge and skills:
- Completed a BSc (Hons) degree in Biomedical Science or a related discipline- Skills in tissue culture and cell-based immunology techniques such as: primary cell isolation, FACS analysis, multiplex cytokine, ELISA and ELISpot assays; and molecular biology techniques such as RNA/DNA isolation and PCR- Experience with human based research including clinical trials and Good Laboratory Practice would be advantageous.
