**About the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations**

**The Role**
Safety Net Branch has policy responsibility for the minimum terms and conditions of employment through the National Employment Standards and modern awards that cover the employment of millions of Australian workers, with a particular focus on women, casuals and part-time workers.
We are at the forefront of whole of government advice on the intersection of employment conditions with skills, training and education, and superannuation as well as targeted measures to boost the participation of jobseekers and indigenous Australians.
**Duties and Responsibilities**
Reporting to the First Assistant Secretary, Employment Conditions Division, Workplace Relations Group, the responsibilities of the Assistant Secretary include:
- providing quality advice to Ministers.
- effectively managing key internal and external relationships.
- effectively managing several high-priority projects at the same time.
- developing and supporting high performance and engagement of staff.
- managing the work of the branch to support the First Assistant Secretary and the Deputy Secretary.
**Qualifications and Education**
You will be a highly motivated leader with exceptional management and leadership skills and outstanding policy development experience.
You will be a strategic thinker with significant leadership and management ability and will possess strong written and verbal communication skills and demonstrated ability as a persuasive leader.
The position requires an academic and/or skill level that is consistent with the key deliverables and responsibilities set out above and in conjunction with the SES Band 1 Work Level standards: Senior Executive Service.

**Eligibility**
**Citizenship** - to be eligible for employment with the Department, you must be an Australian Citizen or, in limited circumstances, in the process of obtaining Citizenship.
Please note, under section 22(8) of the Public Service Act 1999, employees must be Australian citizens to be employed in the APS unless the Agency delegate has agreed, in writing.
**Negative Vetting 1** security clearance.
This selection process may be used to establish a merit pool. The pool might be accessed to fill ongoing and non-ongoing vacancies for similar roles in the Department over the next 18 months.
