**The opportunity**:
Join one of Australia’s premier teams in delivering advanced bioinformatics solutions for clinical genomics at a world leading laboratory
As a key member of this team, the R&D Bioinformatician will provide dedicated bioinformatics and data analysis skills to support forward looking development of new assays and testing options, fine tuning of existing tests, and operationally supporting the ongoing delivery of tests resulting in life changing outcomes to patients. The R&D Bioinformatician will work closely with both the Head of Clinical Bioinformatics, the Head of VCGS R&D and the Sequencing Services and Development Platform team at VCGS. Working directly with these staff, they will provide timely input into assay development in order to minimise the total time needed to bring improvements from idea to working realities.
About your new team
**Your responsibilities include**:
Writing of evaluation reports containing detailed analysis of genomic technologies
In depth analysis of attributes of genomic sequencing data, providing metrics informing adjustment and optimisation of experimental techniques and assay parameters
Development of appropriate quality control, reporting and interpretation support tools to enable analysis to be deployed into a clinical setting
Development, optimisation, validation and implementation of pipelines and analysis approaches in support of VCGS R&D and continuous improvements efforts
Close collaboration and engagement with the relevant leads, members and stakeholders of selected R&D and CI projects
**What we need from you**:
A PhD or substantial equivalent experience in Bioinformatics or a related field
Strong data analysis skills and understanding of the principles behind statistical testing
Knowledge of Unix, bash scripting and command line operations
Experience with one of more bioinformatics pipeline frameworks (Bpipe, Nextflow, WDL / CWL or similar)
Knowledge of programming or data analysis languages used in the bioinformatics ecosystem (Python, Java/JVM languages, R, Perl, C++, or other similar languages - multiple languages an advantage)
Knowledge of mendelian genetics and biological concepts relevant to rare genetic disorders
