The Department of Home Affairs is responsible for centrally coordinated strategy and policy leadership in relation to domestic national security arrangements, law enforcement, emergency management, counter-terrorism, social cohesion, the protection of our sovereignty, the integrity of our border and the resilience of our national infrastructure.
The Australian Border Force, an operationally independent body within the Department of Home Affairs, is Australia's frontline border law enforcement agency and Australia's customs service. The Australian Border Force's mission is to protect Australia's border and facilitate the legitimate movement of people and goods across it.
**Overview of Section**:
The Workforce Health and Safety Section works to build and manage a culture of safety across the Organisation. This includes embedding a Work Health and Safety (WHS) risk management framework, policies, procedures, tools and practices, monitoring the safety of workers and delivering initiatives to educate and raise awareness and ensure a continuous improvement program.
**About the role**:
We are looking for motivated and industrious individuals to fill several WHS Advisor roles across the Work Health and Safety Section, each with a distinct set of tasks and responsibilities.
WHS Strategy and Policy Management:
This high-impact role works with a broad range of stakeholders across the Department’s administrative and operational functions. The work will include:
- Identifying opportunities for improvement in policy and practice
- Writing and progressing policy updates
- Contributing to WHS strategy and audit functions.
WHS Advice and Communications:
This pivotal role is an opportunity to bring your excellent organisational skills, team liaison and digital technology skills to our fast-paced and varied remit of WHS issues. The work will include:
- Triaging and managing the WHS enquiries mailbox
- Managing a SharePoint site on current WHS advice and information
- Contributing to WHS projects and reporting
- Providing WHS advice as required.
WHS Governance:
This role is an opportunity to bring your exceptional organisational skills, suggestions and best practice methods to our broad and highly varied remit of WHS issues and processes. The work will include:
- Assisting with arrangements for the quarterly Health and Safety Committee meetings under the WHS legislation
- Supporting the process for a new structure of Committees across the Department
- Assisting in preparing other governance documents and reporting to high level committees.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to build and maintain strong working relationships with the team and key stakeholders
- Ability to achieve results and manage own priorities and time-frames
- Sound analytical, data management and legal compliance capabilities.
**Specific duties/responsibilities**:
- Provide legislation and policy guidance on workforce safety and wellbeing
- Communicate with and provide advice and recommendations to a wide variety of stakeholders
- Coordinate and participate in relevant committees, networks and stakeholder engagement
- Collect data and undertake analysis for WHS reporting and metrics
- Undertake research and assist with written guidance on emerging issues
- Assist with consultation and the implementation of feedback in the formulation of WHS management strategies, policies and plans in response to changing business needs or legislation.
**Qualifications/experience**:
- Qualifications or experience in WHS or Human Resources will be highly regarded but are not mandatory
- Experience in policy writing or with knowledge management systems will be highly regarded.
