ASIS is Australia’s overseas secret intelligence collection agency. Its mission is to protect and promote

Australia’s vital interests through the provision of intelligence services as directed by the Government.

Its work can involve collecting intelligence relating to national security, international relations and

economic issues. It also contributes to Australia’s coordinated national efforts against terrorism,

proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, and trans-national issues such as people smuggling.

Role
The Language Capability Manager is responsible for the strategic development and uplift of foreign

language capability across the Enterprise. Foreign language capability supports operational research

and analysis, and enables translation and interpretation to deliver high impact for operational missions.

This capability includes:
Canberra based Linguists who have a high level of proficiency in foreign language and an

excellent understanding of the geographic areas, culture and current event. Linguists translate

material, primarily documentary, of intelligence value from a variety of sources and also provide

interpreting support to operational planning, foreign liaison partner training delivery, and visits.

The service’s current linguists and officers in capability enabled positions are drawn from a

diverse range of people with different cultural, and career backgrounds.

Canberra based staff who perform other specialist operational roles, such as analysts, which benefit

from limited language proficiency.

Technology to support the translation of written material from one language to another.

The role requires engagement across the Enterprise and externally, and is embedded in a people

capability team, within the People & Organisation Branch, alongside other role specialisation capability

managers.

Key Responsibilities and Tasks
Outlined below are the key areas of responsibility for the Language Capability Manager

Engage with the SES and EL2 leadership of operational Divisions on the current and emerging

strategic language requirements of the Enterprise.

Engage with the EL1 managers of linguists in multi-disciplinary operational teams across the

Enterprise on the career management and performance development of linguists.

Engage with technology specialists regarding business needs and user testing of translation

tools for computer assisted translation (CAT) and machine translation (MT).

Engage with Learning & Development team on language training policy, courses, study bank,

language proficiency allowances, and other options for employee language training.

Engage with Recruitment team regarding processes for linguist recruitment.

Cultivate and maintain effective relationships and networks across the NIC and FVEYs IC

community on shared language capabilities.

Coordinate corporate records on the spectrum of Enterprise language capability both internally

and available through external networks.

Education, qualification and experience requirements
The following education, qualifications and/or experience will be highly regarded:
High level written communication skills and ability to produce clear and concise written products;
Strong verbal skills and the ability to engage with internal and external stakeholders, potentially
up to SES level;
Demonstrated ability to undertake stakeholder engagement with a collaborative approach to
deliver outcomes to projects

Previous experience in people capability development roles.

Previous experience in engagement with technology development areas.

Previous exposure to language specialists or experience undertaking language studies
