Toowoomba Grammar School (TGS) is looking for an Indigenous Education Mentor to join the team. This is a part time opportunity to empower our First Nations students by providing them with the guidance, support, and encouragement they need to succeed academically and personally. Your mentorship can help bridge educational gaps, boost confidence, and foster a strong sense of cultural identity and pride among our First Nations students.
**About Us**
TGS was founded in 1875 and is a member school of the Great Public Schools Association of Queensland (GPS). It is an independent non-denominational day and boarding school for boys with a total enrolment of 1,200 from Preparatory to Year 12. There are approximately 300 boarders in the School coming predominantly from throughout Queensland, Northern New South Wales and the Northern Territory. The School’s campus covers 20.5 hectares and is located one kilometre from the centre of Toowoomba.

**About the Position**
The Indigenous Education Mentor will provide an extra layer of support to the First Nations students at TGS. The mentor will assist in both the academic and personal development of students, ensuring a well-rounded support system.
Mentors play a crucial role in preserving and promoting cultural heritage by integrating history, knowledge, languages, perspectives and practices into the educational experience. By sharing your cultural insights and experiences, you can help ensure that First Nations traditions and values are passed down to future generations, enriching the educational landscape and fostering greater cultural understanding.
**Selection Criteria**:
You will be able to demonstrate your ability and commitment to:
- **Educational Qualifications**: Completion or near completion of a teaching degree at a university or similar institution.
- **Mentoring Experience**: Demonstrated experience in mentoring or a similar support role, preferably with Indigenous students or within First Nations communities.
- **Cultural Knowledge and Sensitivity**: Strong understanding of First Nations histories, cultures, perspectives, and traditions, with the ability to integrate this knowledge into the mentoring role.
- **Interpersonal and Communication Skills: E**xcellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with students, parents, educators, and community members, fostering positive relationships and a supportive environment.
- **Technical Proficiency**: Familiarity with educational technologies, digital tools, and online platforms used for mentoring and communication, enhancing the learning experiences of students.
- **Organisational Skills**: Strong organisational abilities to manage academic tracking, event coordination, and various administrative tasks, ensuring efficient support and program implementation.
- **Pastoral and Academic Support**: Proven ability to provide both pastoral care and academic support, including tracking academic progress, identifying areas for improvement, and assisting students in navigating educational systems.
- **Commitment to Cultural Activities and Community Engagement**: Experience in planning and leading cultural activities, promoting cultural awareness, and engaging the school community in events such as NAIDOC Week and National Reconciliation Week, thereby fostering a sense of community and cultural pride among students.
