**About the Role**
You will support the day-to-day care of large animals and the maintenance of related facilities and resources at the University of Melbourne's Faculty of Science. Collaborating with the Animal Care team, the incumbent will ensure the welfare of animals, adhering to legislative guidelines and prescribed standards, and actively participate in improvement initiatives.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Daily care and monitoring of large animals, reporting any health or behavioural issues, and ensuring animal welfare in compliance with ethical standards
- Maintenance and upkeep of pens, containment facilities, and related resources to support animal care and research activities.
- Coordination of animal feed, purchases, sales, collections, and transportation to meet faculty demands
- Compliance with legislated biosecurity and stock traceability requirements, including the management of animal health records and reporting to relevant ethics committees
**Who We Are Looking For**
You can demonstrate a strong understanding of animal ethics, biosecurity, and environmental health, as well as excellent communication skills, flexibility, and a willingness to learn and adapt to new tasks in a regulated environment. Experience in a university or veterinary research setting is desirable.
You will also have:
- A relevant degree or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/ training
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills in all aspects of day-to-day large animal care and facility maintenance
- Excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills, strong written communication skills with high accuracy and attention to detail
- High level of flexibility, enthusiasm, initiative and an ability and willingness to learn new skills and take on new tasks as required
